Panettone from Berkeley Bowl

  • 4

I am going to a friend's birthday party next Thursday, and I'm thinking of getting a panettone. Does anyone know if the ones at Berkeley Bowl are good? I've also seen them at Trader Joe's. Which one is better? I don't quite want to buy the panettone at a bakery, because it's so expensive. ($14 at La Farine) My budget is $10 or less.

  1. Do you know which brands you saw at BB? There might be info in the archives by brand name.

    1. I think all the imported brands I've had that didn't have shortening and other artificial crap in the ingredients have been fine.

      1. If you have a chance, you might also check out the prices on pannetone at PiQ on Shattuck Square in downtown Berkeley. The owner (a real live Italian) seems to be serious about the quality his own baked goods, so I would expect him to carry only very good examples of imported breads.

EDIT: I just noticed that the Google map locates PiQ on the northeast corner of the square, rather than on the southwest corner where it actually sits.

        1. I've gotten them at the Berkeley Bowl in the past and they were fine. I like the more "bready" one with the different fruits and raisins. I think that it's in the $8-9 range. Market Hall (oakland) also has a nice fruit cake that they make themselves which is quite good. It's a little more at $12 but definitely worth it with very good ingredients.
