Slater's 50/50 Burger by Design (Anaheim Hills)

Servorg Dec 4, 2010 03:21 PM

Dukefood (who just made his/her first Chowhound post) brought this place to my attention. Have I been asleep at the switch all this time and just never noticed it on this site before? Or is this truly the first post about this amazing looking burger joint? Take a gander at the photos on Yelp. Here's one for example: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/EFiFyj1pSVP8iEzeSo0w5Q?select=Q9QA1US11rSByAVflhnMWA

For me, I thought everything was oversalted. While the 50/50 is cooked well, it's just too damn dry to enjoy. Portions are large, but I think quality isn't that high. Of course, this is when they first opened. It appears they may have gotten better. I'd go again if I was passing by that area, but I wouldn't drive from the SGV just to eat at Slater's.

This place is meh. They only way they know how to cook the burgers is well, whether you order medium or medium rare. Everything from beef quality to toppings are mediocre. Beer selection is ok. I guess it's ok for anaheim hills.

Those pictures are a bit misleading. Except for the third picture, which is an all-beef burger, the others are 50/50 burgers, which must be cooked well because of the bacon. If you do the build-your-own option they hand you an order form which does include a section to mark how you want your burger cooked, but if you order the 50/50 meat they cook it well regardless of what you mark down. I've read reviews on Yelp where people mentioned ordering their 50/50 burger medium or medium rare, but I believe those people are mistaken. They may have marked medium rare on their order form, but probably didn't see where it said that only applies to the all beef and fire (spicy) burgers. The burgers still come out pink in the middle, which may explain why some people believe they received their burgers medium, but, as our waitress explained to us, the pinkness is due to the bacon. They would get shut down real fast if they were serving pork products anything other than well done!

That being said, I've always found the 50/50 to be pretty juicy even well done. The greasy goodness of the bacon more than makes up for the drier beef.

I went this week and was underwhelmed with the 50/50 patty, I got the Old Timey with a 50/50 patty. The server told our entire table that the 50/50 patty was cooked through and would be pink, because of the bacon. She also repeated that, to each person who ordered a 50/50. The 50/50 burger doesn't appeal to me, since I think fried eggs only belong with breakfast items like hash browns, sausage and bacon.

I thought the 50/50 patty was a bit dry and wouldn't order it again.

Two people at my table got all beef burgers, cooked medium and medium rare and both were cooked perfectly.

The next time I go back, I will order an all beef burger.

The 50/50 burger is cooked well because of the bacon in it. I have had the plain burger a couple of times. Both times it's been medium rare, just as I ordered it.

This kind of looks like a rip off of The Counter, no? At 26 Beach they make you a burger the way the envision it and feel it should taste, it is what the owner wants in a burger. The Counter and I guess know 50/50 want you to play chef and give you the power to create, hopefully it will come out to your liking. I am a little lazy, I can build a burger at home but when I go out, I want them to wow me and show me someting interesting. That is just my 2 cents!

Servog, similar in concept, build your own. Similar to Hampton's in the 70's & 80's. The Counter is in no way a great burger, it is good for what it is.

It may be similar in concept, but the execution seems to leave the Counter in the dust...

Oh yes, they look beautiful. The Counter has no execution but they seem to be doing just fine! Look at Tommy's or so many other places that are average at best.

I agree with your assessment; it is very similar in concept to The Counter, but I would have to give the edge to Slaters in execution (tastier burgers, better sides, better beer selection). They also have several signature burgers on the menu for those who don't want to creat their own. Also, be sure to ask about their burger of the month. One that I tried (after a 65-mile bike ride, mind you) was a chicken-fried burger; breaded and fried beef patty, bacon, bacon gravy, and a fried egg. It was over the top delicious.

Slater's, one of the few places in LA area that has fried pickles.

Fried pickles are served at Hooters, Johnny Reb's, The Counter, Lucille's BBQ, Beachwood BBQ, and Beach Pit BBQ, and that's just within OC.

I think it's ok. I've eaten there about 5 times. The fries are actually very good. The burgers are so huge, I always split one with a boyfriend. I think we've had the Thanksgiving burger (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce) 3x. The last time I had it, it just tasted kind of old and not fresh.

Service has always been nice and friendly.

I don't actually like the place, but my bf does. I know this is CH and maybe I shouldn't care, but the lighting is fluorescent and the people are a little too homogeneous for me.

It's good for one or two visits, and then it's personal taste from there.

I have mixed feelings about this place. I live less than 5 minutes away and I've been there a few times, usually with friends who hear about the 50/50 burger and want to try it. Note: There is 50/50 Burger on the menu that is their signature burger, but you can also order any burger with the 50/50 blend meat which is half bacon and half beef. Every burger I've tried so far with the 50/50 meat has been delicious. I've also had all the appetizers and sides. Those are great as well. The only times I have been disappointed have been when I've gotten other burgers. The food is great, if a bit pricey. However, the service has been horrible every time I've been there. The Yelp reviews seem inflated by a lot of people who were just impressed by the concept of half bacon half beef burgers and by people who saw the place on TV. So many reviews mention the bad service, yet still rate it highly. There's a 3 star review on there where a group waited a hour because the hostess refused to seat a party of 5 at a table for 6. Seriously, the food is good, but that doesn't excuse the poor service.

Nolita, I have to ask. Are there any other places like this (great food - even if they have lousy service) that you aren't telling us about? ;-D>

I can put up with some pretty bad service at a burger place if the burgers are wonderful. What have your service issues been? You say your service has been bad each time, but you don't say what that means. Are they slow to take your order and get your food out? Surly wait staff? I know I'm going to go no matter how bad the service is at least once.

The food is pretty damn good, which is why I keep going back despite service issues each visit. I'm tempted to go sometime this week because I really want to try their December Burger of the Month. My main complaint is just how inattentive the servers usually are. They do not check in on you so you have to flag them down for everything except to take your order. I've also had a few extra bad experiences such as when they brought another table's appetizer to our table and we ate it not knowing their mistake (it was the first time we ordered the Vampire Dip so we didn't know what to expect). Even though they discovered the mistake, the item that was mistakenly brought to us was on our final bill. I have a lot more bad service stories, but I really don't want to that negative. It's a nice place and like I said the food is good. I just really wish they'd address their staff issues.

FWIW, I've never had bad service there. A bit unattentive on one visit, but not so bad that it ruined our experience. Just my experience. Then again, we've never been when it is packed.

I've been a handful of times over the past couple of years. I've always really enjoyed it.

The signature 50/50 is moist, but not greasy and has a great bacon flavor. Their all-beef burgers are also very good.

Fries are pretty good, so are the sweet potato fries. My favorite is the artichoke hearts. I like the dill pickle chips, too.

The beer selection is great. There's something for everybody.
