i will be in Newburyport the beginning of next week some time around lunch time, and would be interested in some recs for a decent sand wich, maybe soup, type of LOCAL place, no chains, Also if it were veggie friendly, that would be a plus, iam not a vegetarian but enjoy trying creative vegetarian dishes.. the place doesnt have to be fancy, iam more interested in a good lunch!Thnaks in advance

I also recommend the Purple Onion.

If you're up by the rotary/courthouse area, try the Carry Out Cafe. Despite their name, they do have some seating.

Purple Onion is probably the best bet for lunch.

Here's what my newbport foodie friend has to say:

The not your average joes' unit in the firehouse is actually pretty hard to beat. Park Lunch for local color and fried clams. Black Cow is where everyone seems to wind up, reliable but pricey and right on the water, or Michaels, same kind of deal but more rustic. Downtown there is a new comfort-food sort of place called Loretta's that I've heard good things about.

The Park lunch is not what it used to be. But I still like to go there! I just don't like when they cut corners like cutting the scallops in half like a coin...very disturbing trend.

I actually find the Purple Onion to be fairly expensive for what it is: a small, sandwich shop with seating. The food is okay, but generally underseasoned and sort of boring.

If you're looking for interesting for something more interesting, try Andaman Thai at the Tannery (on Water st.), or cross the bridge toward Salisbury (Rt 1 bridge) and go to MaPow for great Thai and pretty good sushi.

I finally made it to Newburypot and indeed try the "Purple Onion" its what i asked for but not what i expected, if that makes any sense. the food was good, the hot stuff was hot, service was ok, but i guess i thought the "ambience" would be a little different, it was on the sterile side i would say, i didnt see the other recs on the board after having seen the Purple Onion recs, but will try some of those maybe this summer altho today was a fabulous day at the ocean and for wandering arounf Newburyport, i can only imagine the hordes of people in the summer tho, maybe i'll try for Spring! thanks again!

Part of the experience and what you pay for right! And it is all personal.

I agree. I am also looking for a place in Newburyport for coffee and maybe a casual late breakfast/early lunch business meeting. Would love a place other than Starbuck's were we can meet for a couple of hours, where it's okay to go over paperwork together. Good coffee please.

Try Stella's Restaurant on Middle Street, a few blocks down from The Grog.
Nice place for fresh made sandwiches, eggs, coffee.
