San Marzano Tomatoes in Calgary?
Does anyone know where to find canned San Marzano tomatoes? Have tried LIna's and the italian market on Edmonton Trail but no luck (I'm very surprised they weren't at either site). Any other thoughts?
Thanks.

Absolutely here, have bought them. Best price in town.
Also the Unico "San Marzanos" if I am recalling correctly are "San Marzano STYLE" tomatoes. read your labels, lotta bs out there.

any italian market should have them, they even carry them at Safeway now (albeit Unico branc). i can't beleive they don't have them at Lina's! If you're in the NW, I would try Scarpone's, which has a great variety of imported brands: http://www.scarpones.com/ (I think it might be at the skyline address bluther2 posted above, but not sure, since they have seperate importing and retail buildings so it's confusing).
you could also use canned "plum tomatoes" if you have a hard time finding them for some reason. (san marzanos are just a variety of plum
)good luck, i imagine you are going to make a delicious sauce with this!

I've seen some 5lbs cans at Costco.

Which Costco? I've bought them once a few months ago but then they seem to have disappeared from all the Costcos around Calgary. It was an awesome price but obviously its a lot of tomatoes.

Beacon Hill location.

I went there on the weekend and that Costco doesn't have any. So far I've checked, the NW, SE and Balzac Costcos and they do not carry the San Marzanos, only the other generic big canned variety.

Dr. J, San Marzano tomatoes are definitely available at The Italian Store (next door to Scarpone's). They are on the NE corner of Deerfoot & McKnight. They used to carry the Italissima brand (w/ or w/o basil), but the latest case I bought were from Rega. Yes, they are available individually (for roughly $3.85 per can) or by the case (12) at $38.90. Photo of both are attached. Having purchased most every brand of tomatoes, I recommend either of these for cooking over Alymer or Unico.

Thanks everyone. I happened to be at cookbook co. theday i posted and out of convience (certainly not a bargain) picked up a couple cans. I was back at lina's on saturday and they still didn't have on their shelves. It was a zoo and didn't have the patience to track somone down to ask.
Will make atrip out to the NE some time soon to stock up. I agree with nutellaluvr that they are much better than the usual canned tomato brand. They make a much better minestrone and piza sauce.

I bought a case of Rega San Marzano tomatoes at The Italian Supermarket [20th Ave/Edmonton Trail] today. $4.19 per can, $45.25 per case with 10% case discount. They have another brand of San Marzanos too.

As mentioned in the thread Scarpone's has a few different brands of San Marzanos. I highly recommend buying a case of 12.....it's great to have high quality tomatoes on hand for pizzas and sauces. Saves a ton of driving around and they're well worth it IMHO
