My favorites are Wogie's on Greenwich st. in the West Village and 99 Miles to Philly in the East Village (I think it's off of 2nd ave?). Wogies has good waffle fries, and both deliver (to Greenwich village, at least). I order mine with American cheese and onions, though, no peppers and no whiz, so can't comment on those. The bread at Wogies is a little better than 99 miles, but both are decent stand-ins when you can't go all the way to Jim's in Philly!

Jess321 is right. Wogies and 99 Miles to Philly are both good. Do not trust anyone that says Carls. Carls is not a good cheesesteak.

This place has a pretty darn good one and variations, plus nice selection of brews to wash it down... been to Philly-this place is close enough for this retired chef! Great place to enjoy a game on the telly, too! To go or to stay-this place is worth the trip and easy to get to as it's just outside of Times Square near Port Authority.

I know this thread is a bit old, but we tried Carl's tonight for the first time. You may not believe this but I have never had a cheesesteak before. We read your hound cheesesteak threads and settled on Carl's Cheesesteak because Wogie's was just too far. Maybe that was a mistake. We ordered the cheesesteak with onions. The cheesesteak was way over-salted, and I like my salt! The bread was very good, though. Maybe it was just an off night, but it was not very good. Perhaps we will try Wogie's one day.

The only ones that have lived up to my standards so far are Shorty's over in Hell's Kitchen and Philly's on Houston (yeah, the one with the sign in the Disney font, really).
