Great Opening Fish Tag

went last night to fish tag and had an amazing meal....i sat at the bar with friends and started with the chopped chicory, wild arugala and bulghar salad..next we had the Jonah Crab Bruschetta..amazing spice if you like it a little hot. finished off with Sheep milk dumplings. best dish i had in a long time..the whole experience was a homerun. The lamb burger from Onera is on the menu as well..Ryan Skeen was in the front of the bar talking to some friends. great wine list where you can do 3oz tastings if you prefer. Place is a winner.

  1. Thanks for the report. A few questions:

Have you had the sheep milk dumplings at Kefi? Were these similar? And how much did the meal cost?

i had the sheep milk dumplings at kefi as well..they are completely different. the ones at Fih tag have Scallops and sea urchin in the sauce..Kefi is had lamb sausage. the prices are similar to Kefi. the appetizer was $10 and the entrees are around $20..dessert is only icecream or sorbet ..passed on that.

Thanks. Sounds like a worthwhile place.

    2. I had dinner at Fish Tag last night and really enjoyed the meal. We started with the smoked octopus (with chorizo, pomme puree, mushrooms & lemon), which was expertly cooked and plated. We then shared the sheep milk dumplings (with bay scallops, crab, aji amarillo peppers, sea urchin fonduta) and grilled branzino stuffed with head cheese (with mushrooms confit & guanciale braised greens). The sheep milk dumplings were unexpectedly light and the dish was an absolute success, but perhaps better for sharing (and easily shared). The grilled exterior of the branzino was perfect and the fish wasn't overpowered by the head cheese; they worked together surprisingly well. Accompanying greens slightly oversalted and the mushrooms nothing special. Their wine, beer, and liquor menus were extensive (loved my Oban 18yr). Finished with 3 scoops: black mission fig ice cream, chestnut honey ice cream, black currant sorbet. Enjoyed them in that order and next time would order only the fig again, maybe with dark chocolate and ricotta scoops. Good portion sizes, left comfortably full, $120 for 2 after tip. The only material issue was the elevated noise level.

I've only had very late night bar snacks from The John Dory Oyster Bar but loved everything I had there too; these are currently my two favorite casual seafood restaurants in NYC.

The food is great, but yes, the noise can be deafening.

Sifton reviewed Fish Tag today. I thought that the review was so mean spirited and undeserved. This is a lovely restaurant and has delicious food. I just don't get it. I wonder if his palate has gone south to an unmentionable place.
I ate at Ai Fiore on Sunday. Not a truffle in sight. Food and service just okay. Wine list stratospheric.

Mean spirited yes, but at least the review was free of ridiculous hyperbole about the crowd. At least Sifton liked my favorite dishes (lamb burger and smoked octopus). Fish Tag's lack of a dessert menu, besides gelato, probably didn't help matters.

Oh well, like Gus & Gabriel, I'm sure Fish Tag will thrive.

My last meal at Ai Fiori had a lot of truffles. I wonder whether they've changed their menu.

It did. It occupied the same space as Fish Tag but looked busy until the very end. I think the plan was to relocate Gus & Gabriel to a larger space.

        2. Go Early, Eat Well. Less Noise.
Four of us went. Excellent wine list. Great Waiter. Fabulous meal. Octopus, Prawn Bruschetta, Tuna confit bruschetta, Sheep milk dumplings with sea urchin, grilled swordfish. All excellent and exciting. Ice cream and sorbets were outstanding.

The ice cream and sorbets are from Laboratorio del Gelato.

            2. I went last Monday night at 7PM and the noise level was totally fine. Service, wine and food were all great. Started with the scallops and the smoked octopus appetizers....YUM to both. Main courses were the Sea Bass and the Salmon. Both were made to perfection with the right balance of spices. We were able to pair a half glass or a full glass with each dish and I can not wait to go back to try more. Sutton also gave this place a bad review and I totally disagree!!!

              1. We had a terrific dinner there last Sunday, including the smoked octopus app , the swordfish, and the branzino. I was a bit skeptical of the head cheese stuffing but it was absolutely delicious. The amaretto crunch gelato was outstanding. Lovely service. I did not find the noise level unusual or uncomfortable. In addition to the nasty review from Sifton was an even worse one from Bloomberg online. Everyone I know who has tried it has loved it. I just don't get it. Personally, I can't wait to go back!

Agree with the love. Went there about 10 days ago and had an excellent meal. Did an assortment of the bruschetta, the sheep milk dumplings, the sardines, and the sea urchin crudo. Enjoyed all of it. And the wine list is quite good, and not expensive. Noise is a bit of an issue if you're having an intimate dinner, but not so much for a group of friends.
