December Openings and Closings
Any upcoming openings or closings in the Boston area? A few I can think of include the Sea Dog Pub in Woburn (opening), Lawton's in Lawrence (closing), Lakay Island in Salem (opening), and Sake in Braintree (opening). Others?

Floating Rock hasn't reopened.
Thmor Da is open in the old FR space...and the food is quite good.....very similar
I
hope FR can open soon but licensing fees are far higher in Cambridge than Revere. If Cambridge works. it's a home run..if not..a strikout.I'm a big fan of the young lady that took over FR;but Thmor D has similar qualities.FR new locatotion is better but I''m personally indifferent.. T ride either way and byo is a draw in Revere.

My husband and I had wonderful cappuccinos at Thinking Cup on Christmas Eve day. Really pungent espresso tempered by the foamy milk. Not just a latte passed off as cappuccino.
We also shared a chocolate croissant, which was good. The dough was nicely buttery and flaky, but I think I'd like to try the plain. The chocolate filling didn't blow me away. The rest of the baked goods looked good, too. Appears to be an in-house pastry chef.
I'll definitely head back.

re: hotoynoodle
That's one thing I don't get (& one of my BIGGEST pet peeves with Boston chefs / restaurants) - why no one is interested in putting in GREAT seafood restaurant - especially if there's a location with a water view! Boston's right on the ocean (which MOST Boston chefs I feel haven't noticed .......HELLO!!!!) but they keep insisting on opening yet another steak house (maybe because of the "abundance" of Boston cattle ranches?). Yup, I know if I'm sitting at a restaurant, overlooking the ocean, not far from the Boston Fish Pier, the first thing I ask myself is ........... how's the steak? ; )

re: mats77
Maybe Boston as a center for trading beef as a commodity, as opposed to Slaughterhouse and Stockyard and Livestock Trading Central (and Sandbergian Hog Butcher to the World), which Chicago clearly was then?
-
-
re: hotoynoodle
Actually, the heyday of the Boston-area cattle trade was more like 150-200 years ago rather than 100, but Brighton was the center of a thriving Massachusetts cattle trade until refrigerated rail cars were introduced in the 1870s and the trade became consolidated in the midwest. "In 1828 the New England Farmer estimated the value of cattle sold at Brighton, principally for slaughter, over less than two months at $540,000, an enormous sum at the time. Another source tells us that the average sale of cattle at the Brighton Cattle Market in the 1835 to 1845 period exceeded $2 million a year."

re: southie_chick
island creek oyster bar is a step in that direction. hopefully, if icob works (which i am quite sure it will) we may finally get the seafood restaurants we deserve. there will be a trickle down and that homer simpson "doh!" moment of sh*t that might work, for both chefs and investors. much like the success of eastern standard, doing its version of pastis north, for better or worse, look how many places are doing variations on the bistro/charcuterie/gastropub trick? it wasn't so long ago there was a dire lack of good mid-priced restaurants that weren't part of a chain.

Darul Kabob has quietly opened up on Mass. Ave. in Cambridge in the former KFC/Banjo's building. The banner says it is halal and offering kababs, burgers, etc. I say quietly because I think they were open for the first time on 12/24.

re: bear
I have a takeout menu in front of me. Pizza is on the menu with four choices of topping: cheese, halal pepperoni, veggie, and kabab. On the breakfast side they have bagels, pancakes, waffles, etc., and chana daal, aloo, etc., along with hybrids such as waffles with eggs and shish kabab. There's nihari and paaya on weekends and haleem every day. There's magaz masala. There's also katchi biryani (unlike most biryanis, this one starts with raw meat in the meat and rice layers), and an intriguing chicken liver samosa.
-
-
re: bear
I haven't eaten anything there, or even set foot in the place. I got the menu at Foodland, the Bangladeshi grocery store up Mass. Ave. from them. I, too, wonder how they can cope with such a varied menu. Do they have a pizza oven, for example? (Yet, pizza and Indian food combinations are not new. There are several such hybrid joints in NYC, and one that I know of in Santa Barbara. Twenty-five years ago there was a 24-hour such place in Vancouver that delivered. I'd call at 3 a.m. and get a half tandoori chicken and a pepperoni pizza, just for the sheer thrill of it.)

re: FoodDabbler
I've tried the seekh kabab (four pieces of spiced beef, nicely done) and the aloo chop (potato croquette with chicken). Both were very tasty. I've tried to order the chicken liver samosa several times but they've never had it available. Their Indian curries are excellent for the money -- my Malai Kofta was excellent.

Jardek's (sp?) Donuts in Billerica has closed; the space is now "Dolly's D&B"; I assume D&B stands for Donuts & Breakfast. They just reopened on 12/21.
I often stay in Bedford when visiting on holidays, and Jardek's was my go-to donut spot. The new place seems less donut-focused, though the new owner's still in shakedown mode. When things settle down, I'll give the place a try -- if nothing else, the new proprietor seems very nice -- but I'll miss those crullers.

re: brandywiner
Jardek's was a victim of rising rent and shall we say "poor landlord relations". I know and have met some of the family members. Apparantly the neighboring pizza shop in the same strip plaza also left for similar reasons. They still own the equipment from the shop, and the father is looking for new locations.

Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar opened last week (I did a search and didn't see anyone mention it- kinda surprised!). Had dinner there last night. Service was spotty (they gave me the chicken enchiladas. re: BostonZest
Savenors carries lots of local meats. You probably know that, however. But did you know they are selling lion meat? Why is that OK?
www.shrinkinthekitchen.com-
re: scotty27
They told me that the lion meat doesn't come from hunted animals but from animals that are in captivity (I presume that means they don't "die" on their own, however...perhaps they are injured?). It struck me as a bit odd but the butcher seemed aware that one might perceive it as so. You might ask and see what answer you get. They do have lion meat only very rarely and the butcher said they get very little, supporting the notion that this isn't something they are going out and hunting. They have many unusual meats on occasion: rattlesnake, llama, bear, alligator, etc.

I was just searching this board to see if anyone has actually tried the place yet. I work in the next building and since it opened I have walked in three times on rainy days when I didn't feel like going far for lunch. All three times I've waited for someone to acknowledge me and, after being completely ignored, have walked back out.
Not sure what the deal is, but apparently they're not interested in doing much business. It's too bad, since the previous place that was in the space was decent (if overpriced), and the people I work and I with would certainly welcome a good lunch choice there.

I've been to the one in DC. The coffee was pretty good. I can't comment on the sandwiches and pastries, although I do know that they served them as well as pre-packaged salads. The vibe was much better than the typical Starbucks or Juan Valdez (not that that's saying much) - African decor and a bit homier feeling.
Their missions statement is about being directly connected to the farmers and promoting economic development in Rwanda...I think Ben Affleck was involved somehow, but don't quote me on that!

Och, that's a bummer. I loved Wine Gallery's wine-jukebox setup for tasting wines before buying. Totally had me buying more wine than I'd intended to on every visit. The owner stocked a nice selection of Central and Eastern European bitters, too: it's where I found Becherovka and Riga Black Balsam for the first time.

re: MC Slim JB
Its obviously a lot further, but Julio's in Westborough still maintains a tasting room with a Enomatic and worth a trip. There are lots of options for tastings, but Ball Square wines' tasting room might be worth checking out for a store where you sometimes find things you don t expect...

Ah, another Becherovka fan! I first had it in the Czech Republic and was VERY happy (and somewhat surprised) to find that it is stocked in several stores in the Cambridge/Somerville area. (Have found it at Downtown in Davis Sq., the liquor store at Fresh Pond, and Marty's in Newton.)

I first ran into it in the Metamorphosis, an early specialty cocktail at Eastern Standard, then started looking for it at retail. I enjoy it in a Beton (Becherovka and tonic), too. Got to quaff a few on a summer trip to Prague this year: funny to see the logo everywhere there.

Stopped in today and tried a black and white cookie. It was ok. Learned that it is the cafe arm of a Charlestown based catering company, as well as part of Biga breads. I'd better get my bike ready to make the 6 mile ride so as to offset some of the calories.

Waxy O'Connors opened on Thursday night in Lexington, in the old Palio's space. We went last night. Service was horrendous - it took an hour to get our fries, buffalo wings, and sliders. We're assuming it's opening week weeds, and will work itself out. The wings were excellent - no coating, classic sauce, meaty and crispy. Fries were also very good - hand cut, some peel still on. Not super crispy, but good quality. Sliders must have sat under a heat lamp for a LONG time, and were more like little hockey pucks. Nice draft beer selection, two dart boards and two pool tables. I'm excited to have them here in Lexington!
And of course, Bugaboo Creek closed in Burlington and a handful of other locations. Not sure if that happened in December or late November.

Just got word today that Ginger Park is closed! I found out because I had a reservation to eat there this coming week. I had bought one of those "$25 for $50 worth of food" coupons through Open Table. They claim Ginger Park will try to refund the coupon, but seeing as they're probably broke I am not counting on that. A Zoup! franchize appearz to be on the verge of opening at 3 Center Plaza (acrozz from the Government Center T-ztop). A quick view of the menu demonstrates their liberal zubztitution policy of Z's for S's, such as Zoup, Saladz and Sandwichez. I perzonally was a little dizconcerted to zee the lack of full commitment to the marketing idea - in for a penny, in for a pound, I zay! Hopefully they are more committed to their food offeringz.
Alzo, by ztrange coincidence, they are directly beneath and behind Zo Greek fare - what more can I zay?

Waltham updates:
Kebob Factory on Moody St. still has a sign in the window saying "coming soon" , but the outside of the building looks done.
Waltham Fresh Fish and Prime seems to be a fish market/convenience store/deli ? is open- happened to drive past it today on Spruce st. near the corner of Moody - where the comic book store (Danger Planet?) was near the post office. Specials signs were up advertising fried fish lunch specials.
On the same corner on Moody St (in the Mal Elfman space) is India Market? being built out. Also had Kebob and Tandoor sign on the side street - which jives with when the young guy that works K&T all the time asked me if I would still eat there if they moved to a "food court" on Moody St a couple of months ago. Don't know if this means they are moving, or if its just another location - or if other places will open in the food court.

Shopping there I've imagined as a virtual trip overseas. Do we really need another American-style supermarket carrying (south) Asian food? Guess I am really feeling curmudgeonly this morning!

Medford has sprouted yet another Italian-American pizzeria/restaurant, Neighborhood Pizza, on High St. in the square, though I'm not sure if they're open yet. re: Aromatherapy
It didn't look open to me. It probably looks generic because there are about 100 places like it in town already. I don't wish anybody starting a business ill will, but, you have to wonder do we need another pizza/sub shop and why there? That location has no parking at all. Maybe they are going to rely on mostly delivery? I wonder if they have access to the alley in back so they can park a delivery car?

re: Aromatherapy
Medford Square is simply trying to remain ahead of Haines Sq in the running for most pizzerias per square foot in the US. I think the Farragut House in South Boston has shut down -- does anyone have any information on its replacement from the Biltmore (in Newton) owners? I live in the neighborhood, but haven't heard a thing about whether it will get a new name, extensive renovations, what the menu might be like, projected opening, etc? I know a lot of Southie folks were griping about the FH closing (and, for the record, I liked FH quite a bit) but I'm willing to give the new place a chance if its adds something new/better to the area, especially the City Point area that has many fewer restaurant options that further down Broadway.
