Los Chilitos

Has anyone been there recently? There is a Groupon currently for 50% off :o) I would like to know if it's worth it to buy in.

    1. Wife and I were there Sunday - short answer is not anymore. Seems like the place is under new management.

Taco entree is now 4 tacos instead of 3, but house salsas are the same 4 now (no choice) and come in plastic squeeze bottles which enhances the lack of freshness that the salsas sadly now have.

I also had the tortilla and chicken soup which was great before but tasted days old and not very good at all this time around. Server was indifferent to us the whole time.

Prices have gone up a bit too, but for no discernible reason other than cost-cutting because you can taste how the freshness has worn off. We used to love this place but we likely won't be back there for a while. Sad because we're not fans of Mi Tierra (plus it's too far away from us) and there's not much else for authentic Mexican in YYC.

You gotta try Las Tortillas by Marlboro Mall (easy walk from LRT). Best tacos I've had in Canada.

Thanks JM, just added it to my Urbanspoon wishlist :)

Since you were a big supporter of Los Chilitos when it first opened (and I became one off of your recommendation!) and frequent the area, have you tried it lately? Do you have any background info as to a change in ownership or something like that?

          1. re: dknight

They have a coupon on Groupon, isn't that indicator enough??

            1. re: Gobstopper

yea, what's wrong with groupon? it's pretty niave to assume that every establishment that uses groupon is failing... not to mention that many new restaurants use groupon, and los chilitos IS relatively new.

            2. re: dknight

Haven't been in a while, sorry.

Mike- what is wrong with groupon? Kawa and Caffe Rosso have had deals on groupon.

x2 love the place ,i go there all the time.and i live outside of calgary.(You gotta try Las Tortillas by Marlboro Mall (easy walk from LRT). Best tacos I've had in Canada.)

          2. Thanks everyone .... I bought in as no one had replied and there was only a few hours left to go. It was only $12.00 so no big loss if we try it out.

dknight, we did not care for Mi Tierra either; having lived in Mexico I found the spices overly harsh and some dishes not well-cooked nor authentic. We'll have to give Las Tortillas a try!

            1. We bought one of the groupons and went for our first time tonight (Friday). We arrived at about 7:30, without reservations, and the place was PACKED, but we were able to get seated within about 20 minutes or so. The room is TINY, and they have tables packed in everywhere, but they did a pretty good job separating the tables into little "environments," so it doesn't feel like you're in a sardine can like it does at, say, Chianti on MacLeod.

For a starter, we had the Jalapenos Rellenos, which are stuffed with cheese and covered with a red salsa and sliced walnuts. They were good, but somewhat cold and VERY spicy. I have a high tolerance for spicy food, and even I thought these were too spicy. I was able to handle it, but my mouth was burning for 10 minutes afterward, which shouldn't happen.

I had the Chile En Nogada (Chef's Suggestion), which was sold on the menu as a poblano pepper stuffed with ground beef and pork, fruit and spices, and topped with a walnut sauce. Since this is the most expensive entree at $17, I was expecting them to be large and quite full of meat (look the dish up on wikipedia, and you'll see a picture of what it should look like stuffed with meat). When my plate arrived, however, I was VERY disappointed. In each pepper was essentially a scoop of miscellaneous fruit (lots of pineapple chunks) and covered with the nogada sauce and dried cranberries. I only had ONE piece of meat in the whole thing, and it had a weird texture and flavor, and I don't want to imagine what part of what animal it was. This entree didn't come with any rice or beans, and wasn't nearly enough food to fill a person. In fact, after the appetizer, my entree, and one of my partner's tacos (see below), I left the restaurant hungry - which again SHOULDN'T HAPPEN. This dish is WAY overpriced, and I wouldn't even pay $10 for it. thoroughly disappointed.

My partner had the Quesedillas Mexicanas with Mixiote (spicy BBQ chicken with pickled nopales). Even though they are called "quesedillas," they are just tacos with cheese. They were EXCELLENT and definitely the highlight of our dinner. The entree was $14, and came with 4 tacos STUFFED with meat, as well as rice, beans, and the 4 salsas mentioned by another poster. However, the rice and beans were pretty horrible... The rice was either not fully cooked, or completely overcooked, because about 60% of the grains were dry and crunchy. I don't know how a restaurant could mess rice up like that, but they certainly found a way. The beans were just blech... i grew up in the states and have eaten beans at probably hundreds of different restaurants, and have never had beans with such a... "strange" taste. there were also chunks of non-bean things in there that we couldn't identify.

The service was quite excellent, though. Very fast, very friendly, water filled every 5 minutes, etc. couldn't ask for better service, actually.

So, in sum, the food was overall pretty bad, save for the tacos which were excellent. Will I go back? unlikely.... the food was too hit and miss, and honestly, Mi Tierra/Tu Tierra and even Salt and Pepper (which i'm not a huge fan of) have FAR better food.

stuffed jalapenos ,ya they are supposed to burn afterwards..i make these all the time .the stuff in there that burns is the membrane and seeds.if they dont take those out a tendermouth(lol just ribbing ya) will find that the heat lingers.

^^actually, the peppers were not spicy, it was the red salsa they put on top. i don't know if they screwed up a batch or what, but I can't see how they could serve something that spicy on a regular basis. as i said, i have a high tolerance for heat, and my mouth was burning for minutes afterwards. my partner had a more severe reaction and started coughing, etc.

Interesting. Both times I've been, I thought the food was pretty good but the service was mediocre to terrible, which is why I didn't buy the groupon. I'll likely go again in nice weather when I feel like mexican chow.

                3. Odd - I had the opposite experience last Saturday. Mind you, I did order different items. I ordered the gringo burrito.. I enjoyed the amount of heat and spice not only in the burrito, but the two types of sauces that accompanied the large burrito (tomato and cream sauce), plus the shredded pork inside was nice and soft. The rice wasn't mushy either. My boyfriend ordered the seven meat tacos - I tried a bit of each. Each taco tasted different and again, I enjoyed the distinct flavour of each kind. Service was very quick and friendly - I really enjoyed the food here. Chips and guac were adequate - the chips were a bit too salty but with a bottle of beer, not for long! I thought it was great value ($14.00 for my dish, which came with rice, beans, chips and guacamole).
