Austin restaurant suggestions for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

LoisM Nov 29, 2010 03:53 PM

Normally, I would review some of the suggestions from the Chowhound archives before asking a question like this, but this is a somewhat unique situation.

I coming to Austin from Louisville, KY to visit my son for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (these are his only days off from work). He lives in the Hwy. 183/Texas 45 vicinity, if that helps.

So here's my question -- What restaurants can you good folks suggest which are open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

We're both open to a wide variety of cuisines. I'm assuming most of the Asian restaurants are open those days. Maybe some of the local hotels have buffets or restaurants you would recommend? Other ideas?

I'm afraid his kitchen is going to have only the most rudimentary equipment and supplies and I won't have a chance to do any grocery shopping, etc. after my plane arrives.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

how far are you willing to drive?
my reason for asking is 183/45 is pretty far north.
(i live in the area so i'm pretty familiar).
most of the hotels with kitchens are downtown, which is a bit of a drive.
if you are looking for stuff near your son's house, that will narrow it down considerably.

We'd probably be willing to drive into town. I don't think that would be an issue. (Have GPS, will travel!) That's why I'm posting here because otherwise I'm afraid we'll end up eating at Denny's the whole weekend. :-)

Found a thread from December 2009 listing restaurants in Austin which were going to be open for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This will at least get us pointed in the right direction, hopefully. Still open to any other suggestions.

It is a great question especially if you do not want hotel food or some structured Christmas Dinner . I almost always eat out on Christmas Eve and all I have been able to count on being open is Asian or Indian. I would love to have some other suggestions.

Per a recommendation off of the thread-link: I've had two friends go to Green Pastures and rave about it over the past two weeks, and I trust both of their opinions. Last year I went to Christmas brunch with a friend at 1886 Cafe at the Driskill (Southern staples including grits), and we were both very happy.

I am also looking for some place to go and so far, The Driskill and Trio are my top choices (although they are both buffets) that are open on Christmas Day:

24 Diner is open. They just sent me this email:

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day: Open 24 hours

In addition to our full menu, we'll be offering a special Christmas meal for $19.95 featuring a standing rib roast slow-roasted with homemade fresh horseradish sauce and a choice of two sides (mashed potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes, French fries, mac & cheese, bacon-braised greens or daily vegetable).

New Year's Eve: Open 24 hours

New Year's Day: Open 24 hours

Full menu, plus we will be serving fresh black-eyed peas and greens from Oak Hill Farms in Poteet, TX. Eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day is supposed to bring you prosperity for the year. Our vegetarian take on this traditional Southern dish will be made with sautéed onions and garlic and finished with scallions and butter.

That's good news. I'm planning to eat out on Christmas Eve and just want a regular meal not at a hotel.
