I want to celebrate my birthday with my husband and two friends. I was looking for a tasting menu for $150 or under, any cuisine, fun atmosphere a plus.

You might like The Modern Dining Room, which has great tasting menus and a lively vibe. For Italian, try Babbo or Scarpetta.

I also love the tasting menus at Jean Georges and Picholine, but the atmosphere might be too sedate for your group.

I highly recommend Bouley's tasting menu. The cost is $125 per person, and the food is wonderful! Just celebrated Thanksgiving Day at Bouley. The restaurant is beautiful and the service is very attentive. I also celebrated my birthday at Bouley in August and had the tasting menu; it was wonderful too!

The Kaiseki dinner at Kyo Ya - you have to order it two days in advance so they can get special ingredients flown in, but it's pretty amazing if you like subtle Japanese flavors.

Otherwise - and take this with the caveat that I'm not the biggest fan of tasting menus as a general rule - there's good stuff to be had at The Modern, WD-50, Babbo, Del Posto, SHO... (those were just the first ones that came to mind...) - even were you to do the standard prix fixe at EMP ($125) or Del Posto ($95) - their prix fixes are four courses as opposed to the usual three, and with the various amuses and pre-desserts and whatnot you'll wind up having a meal nearly as varied as any tasting menu - more varied, actually, if you're each ordering different dishes and sharing as you go.

I suggest trying to get 4 at Momofuku Ko. It'll be tough. But I had a blast there. The food is outstanding obviously. The decor there may be plain. But I thought the atmosphere was fun. The dinner tasting is $125 and a steal at that price IMO.

WD-50 - VERY inventive, kind of felt like going to Spain for some molecular gastronomy, and the staff was really nice!
Degustation- also very good. I actually went here based on other Chowhound reviews and it was great.

Both places are worth the time and money, but you have to call ahead to eat there (can't just walk in).
