30th birthday dinner suggestions?

We're looking to spend New Year's weekend in town to celebrate my brother in law's 30th birthday. We plan on going to Galatoire's on the 31st for lunch, but his actual birthday is the 30th. So, we were thinking a casual, but great tasting/fun dinner might be just the ticket for Thursday night. I looked into Stella, but it seems a bit more formal then what I'm thinking. They also can fit 7 people at the most and we would probably need 8. The food sounds great though, so if anything else is similar I'd love to hear about it. We usually do Cochon for this type of meal, but if there is something new along those same lines that would be great.

  1. Dick & Jenny's is casual but very good. It is located uptown, a block from Tipitina's. A bit farther uptown is Upperline, which is great fun. Their longtime chef recently moved on, but I have not heard that the quality has declined. And the owner, Joanne Clevenger, the presiding spirit of the place, remains. If you prefer to stay downtown, there are some good Spanish options: Rio Mar and Rambla. Neither is formal. Also a new entry to the scene: Feast New Orleans, which is quite close to Cochon. Have not yet been to Feast, but it has been getting rave reviews. Herbsaint is reliably good, and while not exactly casual it is not so formal as Galatoire's or Stella's. Btw, Stella has a casual "brother" restaurant: Stanley, on Jackson Square. It might be too casual for your Thursday night - Stanley is almost a diner - but the food is quite good.

      1. My birthday is on the 30th of December. I celebrated at Emeril's on the 30th two years ago and had way too much fun. I was ready for lunch the next day which was Galatoire's. We walked right in with no problem around 12:30. Without my knowledge my wife told our waiter it was my BD. There were numerous BD celebrations going on so one more was no problem Everyone sang HBD to me too. So go to a great place on the 30th and celebrate then celebrate again at Galatgoire's.

        1. To "muddy the waters" some, I'll also throw out G W Fins. It is not that I disagree with the other recs., but want to offer another option.

Enjoy and Happy Birthday to B-I-L,

Apparently his girlfriend has picked La Petite Grocery. Any comments or thoughts. I've never been there or really even heard of it, so I'm at a loss for what to order, etc.

I have not, but I've heard good things about it. Others should be able to fill in my blanks.

              Good luck,

          2. Bayona Bayona... I dream of the bone sucking good quail salad and the desserts. uhh yum. great wine list, extremely personable service, outdoor or quiet intimate indoor seating.
