Ji Rong in SGV - any thoughts?

Going tonight.
I'm told the Beijing/Northern Food is quite good.

  1. Some of the meat pies and turnovers are good, as are some of the hot pots (esp. lamb), but everything else is otherwise rather mediocre. Peking Duck isn't worth it, if that tempted you at all.

      Thanks ipse.

I am invited with a large group and I know that the Peking Duck will be served.
So -- tempted or not, worth it or not -- I'll be having trying it, as well as the lamb hot pot with your recco.

    2. I had many really good dishes last night and a few so-so.
As ipse pointed out the Peking Duck was nothing great.
      But....
-- Cold Appetizers were a notch above standard. Very moist flavorful chicken
-- A pork meat pie was outstanding - I have no idea what it is called - but if it were better known it would give the far better known "Shandong Beef Roll" a serious run for its money, THIS WAS THE HIT OF THE NIGHT FOR ME.
-- Shredded Pork with Cabbage - simple and good.
-- Lamb Hot Pot - excellent
-- Kung Pao Chicken - pedestrian
-- Water Boiled Fish - excellent version

Overall, I liked it a lot more than I expected and I would happily go back.

Their thousand layer pancake isn't bad. I like their basil chicken (san bei ji) but they took it off the menu a couple months ago because people would cancel before the 20 min. cook time, after being full from other dishes. I second passing on the duck as well. I like the pork spareribs, a little sweet, if you're into that. A lot of people get the beef pancake roll but I still like the one at Mandarin Noodle Deli better. The tofu soup is good, it's simple.
