re: kariface
Thanks for the input, everyone! We ended up having a drink at Marlow and Sons (ps...fantastic cocktails!!!) then dinner at Diner. I really loved the apps and the chicken - the burger was fine but didn't live up to the hype. Great space, service was casual yet still professional, I could easily become a regular here if I didn't live 3,000 miles away.

I second the vote for Rye. It's also dark, has great drinks and even greater food. Was there w/ my wife and in-laws on Wed night. Had the duck confit app and some oysters - loved them both. The chicken dish was a different preparation than I've had in the past, as I imagine they are using more seasonal ingredients, but is always flawlessly executed. My wife had the monkfish entree which was delicious. Meaty but lightly prepared, if that makes sense.
In short, Rye is one of my go-to spots in BK. Great food with no pretense, casual but classy atmosphere and great food and drink. You can't go wrong.

i would go to marlow and sons first for a drink, some of the freshest oysters and get the crostini too.
then go over to diner for dinner...

re: dougnash
this is a good plan, dougnash! i like both restos, but i prefer marlow earlier in the night because it gets super packed later, and diner has a darker, sexier vibe.
however, dare i suggest a third horse in the running? rye on s1st - really well-executed modern american. the crab croquette is lovely, and i fell in love with the lamb shank last year (it should be on the menu again for the fall/winter months). the meatloaf sandwich is rich and meaty and just hits the spot. also, superb cocktails, especially the southside.
