is non-alcoholic vanilla extract any good?

While browsing through the spice section at the local grocery store the other day I saw that there was an alcohol-free vanilla extract being offered among the other various vanilla extracts. I do not drink alcohol, and although I don't have a problem with purchasing and using regular vanilla extract, I was curious about the alcohol free stuff (which seems to be glycerin-based from a quick glance at the ingredient list) as an alternative Has anyone tried this, and if so, was the stuff any good?

    1. This was about 10 years ago, but I tried the Frontier alcohol free vanilla extract. It was exceptionally weak in flavor and hugely expensive.

If you're okay with the regular stuff, then I would go with something like Penzey's double strength extract and use half. That will give you half the alcohol, and, although it will be costly, you'll get much more bang for the buck than the alcohol free stuff.

      1. I tried the alcohol-free stuff. Tastes like it has been put through a deflavorizing machine. I don't use it.
