Stuffing recipe calls for breadcrumbs; should I toast them first?

Hi

I'm using Mark Bittman's Favorite Bread Stuffing recipe. The recipe says to take some bread and get it down to irregular small chunks. It doesn't say anything about it being dry though.

Should I throw it in an oven and dry it out first? That is my first instinct but it says absolutely nothing about using dried bread.

What do you guys think?

Don't toast. Just put the bread in a food processor and pulse a few times until it's the right consistancy.

In Bittman's "How to Cook Everything" he says toast if you like, leave untoasted if you like.
