Well, in the wasteland of poor excuses for Chinese Cuisine in Sarasota; finally there is HOPE. Gold Dynasty Restaurant,4195 N Tamiami Trail, (U.S. 41). Without trying to review each dish, by
catagory, I will say, the Dim Sum selection ranges from Sweet Buns and shrimp purse to Tripe and 2 types of Chicken Feet., There is really good Chow Fun,Chinese Broccoli w/Garlic sauce Snow Pea Tips w/Garlic, Beef Short Rib w/Black Bean and Green Pepper, Pork Belly w/Bean Sauce Beef Tripe w/Onion,Pepper in Black Bean Sauce, Chicken Feet w/Black Bean Sauce, Many Clay pot dishes, Whole Flounder Steamed or Fried, Shanghai Bai Cai.
Prices are very reasonable, the ubiquitous combination plates served w/ egg roll rice, fried or white, and soup $9.95-10.95. Lunch specials are $ 5.75-5.95 They are open everyday 11:00Am -10:00PM
Can't wait to go back!!!!!!!

We'll try Gold and will report back, but I can tell you that I'm not convinced. So far, we've tried Mak's, China One, NY Chinese, China Palace, Mrs Chen's, China Palace Express, and China Wok, and maybe a few others in the area, and they all are totally not to our liking. We are used to Chinatown in Philly, and Hunan Best in Harleysville PA, and we would love to find something in Sarasota that can come close. Any suggestions? We usually start with Wonton soup, egg rolls, and pork fried or vegetable fried rice (which has to have egg and bean sprouts or it's not fried rice in my eyes) and Szechuan or some sort of spicy chicken dish. The way most restaurants in Chinatown in PHL make their dishes is that everything's diced in very small chunks and not so much peppers, cabbage and onions. More meat, water chestnuts, baby corn and snow peas in a nice sauce. Cashew Chicken and Lo Mein's are my favorite and General Tso's or Sesame Chicken or something spicy are my hubby's.
If you can help, please do let us know. If not, I guess we'll have to start our own Chinese Restaurant in Sarasota.

Coincidently, went to Gold Dynasty last night, Friday. We were 3 and we had steamed Pork Bun Char Siu Bao, Splurged on Bejing Duck, full blown, with plum sauce, pancakes, Scallions and followed by Duck Bones with veg.and Hong Kong style pork chops, Snow Pea tips, and Chow Fun. All very good.

Trvl, the style of cooking is primarily H.K. but they have some spicy dishes. Now do not get me wrong, this is not anywhere near NYC Noodletown or the numerous specific regional s shops in Queens.....But, for Sarasota, "It ain't bad" as I would rate it best in town. Saturday breakfast of Dim Sum and real Chow Mein is also very good. For the Lo Mein lover, there is an extensive noodle menu.

          When are you opening ????
          I can't wait !!!
Sounds like you are a Chinese Restaurant Maven !!
Let us know when and where is the Grand Opening !!

          1. re: irwin

Irwin, nope, just leftover info. from the "old days of going to H.K. (Garment Center Biz) now Good chinese is a thing I find lacking in S,.W. Fl, I've noticed even T.C. Choy, Tampa, could not maintain its quality. My favorite for S.E. Asian in SRQ is still Pho Cali, a madhouse in season, especially now with "Taste of Asia folding up their tent on Main St. and moving to Siesta Key.

Thanks for your support Irwin. I wish! You back the financing and I'll be the manager and chef.

              1. re: trvlbarb

Thanks for the offer, but I will pass. The restaurant business is one of the toughest.

                1. re: irwin

trvl, To update you on the menu; a friend of mine ate at Gold Dynasty yesterday. Now he is a little more authentic in his Chinese food search, so here is his menu, as I take highlights from the take out menu he provided, with his notes!!!
First 3 pages is "American Chinese", last 2 are real H.K. dishes. First pages run the gamut of American style standards Eggroll, Veg. roll, Shrimp roll, Wonton, eggdrop, hot and sour soups. Triple delight, with or without garlic sauce General Tso Chick, or Gen.Tso Shrimp. Szechuan region dishes include Beef, Chicken, Lo Mein and Szechuan Tofu. All the usual Fried Rice, chix, pork, beef, shrimp, veg, and the ubiquitous "House Special Fried Rice" Assorted lunch specials all for $5.75 or 5.95,(served w/fried rice, egg roll, or wonton soupor Egg Drop Soup. Assorted Egg FooYoung, Cashew Shrimp, Shrimp w/ lobster sauce Moo Shu Pork, (4 pancakes). etc.

Now, for my buddy's favorites. He was at a banquet table of 8 diners; West Lake Beef Soup,, Various Congees Chix, seafood and Black egg w/pork rice congee. Chow Fun Pan Fried, Beef, C.F w/beef and veg, seafood C.F. Yang Chow Fried Rice,Pan Fried Flounder (Whole),Fried Crab w/Ginger and Scallion, Beef Omasa w/ginger and scallion, Dry sauteed String Beans, Beef Short Rib w/Black Bean and green pepper, Shredded Pork w/ pickle.House Special Chow Mein, served on pan fried noodles, he really freaked over this dish! Overall we are going back to G.D. for Dim Sum Breakfast next Sat. they open at 11:00 AM. Their list of Dim Sum includes almost all the better known dishes like steamed buns, dumplings pan seared and steamed, as well as chicken feet w/black bean sauce or steamed, and a few exotic items. So far our group for Dim Sum Breakfast is 7, the banqueet tables, (with lazy susan), hold up to 10 diners.
I hope this gives you a little more info.

              2. re: irwin

What happened to the one that you were going to?

                1. re: Mother of four

mother4: I don't understand your question; We were a group of 3 on Friday night; My friend went for a "Banquet Style" dinner of a table of 8 the following night, Sat. The only other restaurant I recall stating we were planning on trying to get to was the pizza place in New Tampa area that received such good press on Chowhound.

                  1. re: ospreycove

It was in reply to Irwin. Check in the upper right hand corner.

                    1. re: Mother of four

My opinion...dim sum is just so so...some things not good ..some ok....found the size of the individual pieces quite small except for the pork buns..BUT...I am very spoiled...I am a snowbird from Toronto and have experienced some VERY VERY GOOD "authentic" Chinese Food...will return and try the menu from the back pages.

                      1. re: bobinken

Bobinken....As a NYC transplant this is a wasteland for good Chinese and Gold Dynasty is better than the slop houses that populate this town. Everything is relative.......LOL
The Chinese New Year Banquet menu was a pleasant suprise too.

                        1. re: ospreycove

ospreycove....I know how horrible the errr umm Chinese?? errrr umm food?? is in this are correct though....everything is relative..LOL

How is Gold Dynasty's American style Chinese food...we only tried the dim sum and the chicken congee...blech.

I still wish that we will get lucky again and get an even better new Chinese restaurant in the near future but I guess I better not hold my breath..

                          1. re: bobinken

For all of the suffering the lack of Chinese food is causing you, you might just get in the car and drive to ABC in St. Pete or China Yuan or Yummy House in Tampa. There are excellent dishes at all three places.

Bob inken. I have not tried the "American Chinese" other than the dishes mentioned above. The extra or requested menu has some really good dishes; Chow Fun with Dried Shrimp, Beef Tripe in Black Bean sauce, Sauteed Snow Pea Tips, and really spicy Chicken Feet, Pork Belly inGarlic Sauce are all good to my taste.

ospreycove...thanks...they all sound good...will give them a try. We ordered the chicken feet from the dim sum menu...waitress said they were cooked with a red sauce and black beans and when we got them they had been done in a brown bland gravy,,,didn't say anything...just ate them.

              1. Just ate there and was happy happy happy! I'm also an NYC hound in FL for a bit and have not enjoyed any of the Chinese I've tasted in Sarasota thus far. I had only the shrimp dumplings, the fried tofu and the stuffed tofu skins from the dim sum menu. All were delicious. I'd love to hear more about these St. Pete options but the 3 dishes I tried here were all delicious. Can't wait to go back for more. Thanks for the rec all!
