H Mart for another take on the Asian supermarket

H Mart gets mentioned from time to time here but no one has really posted on it that I recall. The one on Robson downtown in Vancouver is a great place to while away an hour between screenings. While there is a food court attached, the day I went I was browsing in the actual store, which carries many Asian products but has a focus on Korean. So many intriguing items, many of which I did not know remotely the provenance thereof. Here's a few pix of the some the interesting stuff I came across that day. I tried the pine bud drink and it is the poster child for truth in advertising, refreshing but totally pine buddy.

Not an expert, but I love their fresh packages of the Korean side dishes, the salty bean sprouts etc. (There's word for this...banchan?).
Also, great selection of kimchi which I eat standing in front of the fridge (at home, not in the store).

Love the visual, waver :-). I also noticed they have some cool looking savoury snacks such as Korean Cheetos which I will have to check out.

Saw an interesting new product there today. It was just above the yuzu marmalade (tea concentrate?).

It's yuzu syrup in sachets in a package. Makes a nice cold drink, hot tea, whatever and it's the real deal!

I go there on a more or less weekly basis. I usually get maitake, bibimbap topping and their frozen sashimi is pretty good and often on sale. There's a huge selection of Korean seaweed too,

Prices @ HMart can be surprisingly good for downtown but I find service there generally to be cold/unfriendly/offputting.

The sushi place in the back of the mini food court used to be excellent-all Japanese run-but again brusque service bordering on rude-haven't been back for a while and have no desire to ever return.

The ownership changed at Matoi - the sushi place at H-Mart - and the quality declined. I actually like the Korean stews and soups at the stall in the middle. I especially like the rice cake soup (ddeok guk).

Fembrake is a seasoned baby fern. Mostly used on biibimbap.
