Jean Georges advice

cgleon Nov 24, 2010 06:36 AM

This Saturday I'm taking my Mother to Jean Georges to celebrate her birthday. Neither of us have been and we've been looking forward to this dinner for some time now :)

A couple questions:

1. Any recommendation on which tasting do? They have the Jean Georges signature dishes or the Fall Menu for tasting options. Both look great and I don't know if there is one that I MUST get. I'm also considering the wine pairings instead of a bottle(s).

2. The only other 4 star restuarant that I've been to is Per Se, which was very formal. In terms of dress code, would I feel out of place without a tie? My mother, coming up from Washington DC, is very curious (aka asking me everyday what she should wear) about what the dress code is like. Please help a son.

Thanks for your help in advance!

My wife is one of the captains at JG. She recommends that you got one of the tastings and your mom get the other. If you dont want to share, get the JG menu.

    Also, dont wear jeans.

As usual, gutsofsteel is spot-on. One of you should get the Jean-Geroges tasting, and one the seasonal. If you're having dinner (as opposed to lunch), definitely wear a jacket and tie (tie, isn't required, but if you're wearing a jacket, how hard is it to put on a tie as well? Plus, your mom will feel even more special!).

Also, I've had very good luck with the pairings, so if you're inclined to have wine, trust the sommelier and go for the pairing. My only possible suggestion, though, is that it's a lot of wine, so unless you and your mother both really like a LOT of wine, you might split a pairing. JG will do that for you.

It's a lovely restaurant, and probably my favorite in Manhattan. Hope you have a wonderful time!

A tie is not required, but in my opinion, you will fit in more if you wear one. And it's a special occasion - why not dress up? It's an elegant restaurant.

Your mother should "dress up" - whatever that means for her.

Absolutely. A tie will be worn :)

          Thanks for the input.

Jean Georges is my favorite restaurant in Manhattan. I would wear a jacket, but you can dispense with the tie if you wish. Jeans seem acceptable for lunch.

As to the food, both are good; get your mom's preference. I use his cook books and always am up for something new.

I would never, ever wear jeans to Jean Georges no matter what.

Also maybe one of you can get the seasonal tasting menu, and the other can get the signature dishes tasting menu...that way you can try both.

Seconded! One of each tasting, then share!
