Kicker's Smoked Meat & Deli - YYC

TSAW Nov 24, 2010 06:00 AM

Has anyone been to the new smoked meat place in the beltline, called Kickers Smoked Meat & Deli? It's at 13th Ave and 1st Street SW, right next to St. James Pub. I noticed vinyl type sign up, tied up with rope, that said 'open now' but didn’t see anyone going in. It appears from the outside that they kept the huge opulent chandelier in the entry, that was there back in the day when it was The Taz night club. I tried to search online for a menu and info, to no avail. I find it really odd that in the 21st Century, a resto doesn't consider that a website is a critical marketing tool, and should be launched the minute you open your doors!

Any info on it, Chowfriends?

Went in today as I like checking out new potential lunch spots. Kickers took over the small entry space of the former nightclub. They have 4 small tables and a couple of small counter style seating along the wall and near the window. I think the chandelier works great in the space they have. They're open from 11 to 7 M-F and 12-5 on Sat.

The sandwich boards on the wall lists the sandwiches ($10) and grilled paninis ($12) on offer as well as sides (coleslaw, potato, macaroni salad and fries). They also have poutine on the menu. For their montreal smoked meat sandwich on rye, they have a 6oz size and and 8 oz. All the sandwiches come with potato chips, coleslaw and 1/4 of a dill pickle.

On their recommendation, I ordered a Quebec City panini with smoked turkey, cranberry sauce and brie, which I thought was quite good. I think I will try out the poutine next as well as the Montreal smoked meat sandwich (although I am definitely not an expert on either of those dishes).

It looks like they have a website up and running now.
