THE NEXT IRON CHEF FINALIE: "Honor" aka "Canora v. Forgione" (Season 3, Episode 8) [Spoilers]

ipsedixit Nov 21, 2010 05:58 PM

The Next Iron Chef is ... CHEF FORGIONE.

[Big collective yawn]

This was a really boring episode in my opinion.

"Honoring" Thanksgiving feast? Were the creative dept. at Food Network off this week?

Canora needs to either buy a stopwatch, or figure out where the clock is at Kitchen Stadium.

Forgione, too salty.

Canora, too sweet.

Forgione, no turkey

Forgione ... 5 best dishes.

Canora ... most consistent

Have at it.

Meh. Anti-climatic ending. It was obvious that Forgione was going to win the contest. He seemed to win this fair and square at least (unlike some other judgments). Still though, I was disappointed with the "secret ingredient" being thanksgiving. Kinda takes away from the "tradition" of Iron Chef. Whatever. Still a fun season to watch, if not 100% legitimate.

yes, i'm happy Forgione won, but man, was that a snooze-fest!

        1. chowser RE: ipsedixit Nov 22, 2010 02:41 AM

Yeah, could've missed most of it. See Canora was true to form by insisting you HAVE to have turkey and make a traditional dinner w/ cranberry sauce, etc. Why does he think he gets to set the rules based on what's in his head? Thought it was also funny that he said, in the voice over in the end, that he was sure he'd won. Overall, I don't think Corgione's health could have taken his being an IC--he was just too riled through the whole show and I was half expecting a heart attack at any point.

Usually I'm riveted, last night I was giving myself a pedicure during the show. Forgione clearly won the night, but has been a little inconsitent throughout the season. That said, I find him much more watchable than Canora and will enjoy tuning in to see him.
Now can we have a contest to replace Garces?

My guess is that if they replace Garces they won't bother with a contest. Instead just crown Bristol Palin the new Iyern Chef.

Which, of course, was preceded by this rant from Canora:

What does that even mean? Is that a compliment, or a backhanded insult?

FN has such characters like Rachel Ray and Semi-Homemade lady Sandra Lee.

Plus, Ming has another platform for his shows -- PBS.

I don't think FN needs Ming, and I don't think Ming needs FN.

she'd have to make a cocktail to go along with it too. the sensible route would be to do something with sake, so my guess is that she'd use mirin.

Am I remembering correctly? I think Ming did have an FN show for a while and when they decided to move away from the standard kitchen set cooking shows, Ming got a new travel show "Ming's Quest". the most memorable episode was Ming visiting an ostrich farm and having to ride an ostrich like a rodeo bull.

Anyone else remember this? After that Ming went back to PBS. I have no idea why he would want to come back to FN now. I guess being an Iron Chef is a big deal for some people.

He had not one, but two shows on FN. He originally had "East Meets West", and then "Ming's Quest". IIRC he left because he didn't want to be associated with some of the hucksterism that was already starting to show up

Ming Tsai's old show was better than anything currently on FN. Or the new Cooking Channel for that matter (an exception would be Laura Calder). A talented chef, no gimmicks.

I would have liked Chef Tio to be in the finale as she did so good on a number of challenges, but it is what it is. Better for Forgione than Canora IMHO. Just something about Canora's actions that I didn't care for.

I would bet Chef Tio was nixed by TPTB for not having enough sass or eye candy potential. Which is why Forgione with his mohawk and renegade attitude, who bombed at least as often as Tsai did, went into the finale while same was cited as cause for Tsai's elmination in the semi's.

Really, it should have been Battle Pork and Pineapple for Thanksgiving. with a requirement for breakfast, lunch and dinner presentations.

In the beginning they should have said it was the "Next Mediocre Italian Chef from NYC to replace the Great Mario Batali".

but i actually thought forgione's food looked pretty darn good this episode across the board. i wanted to eat all of it.
and while i get the lack of IC-ness, i am a giant sucker for thanksgiving so i kind of liked the challenge.

I think there's some truth to that, Miss Needle. I don't think it's 100% fixed, but I do think they have 2 or 3 people they are actively considering and are using the show to figure out how they'll appear on camera, etc. Also, as a way to introduce these folks to the FN audience. The remaining contestants are there strictly for entertainment.
