Do you know what style you're looking for? It would really help in differentiating. Some bakeries do certain things well.
I was letdown by Two Little RedHens which a lot of people seem to like.
Blackhound has interesting flavor combos that are still classical somehow, and they would be my general all purpose suggestion currently.-----

I prefer more delicate sweetness than rich (cake, icing, etc.) as a barometer, the only thing I like at Magnolias is their banana pudding and biscotti at Veniero's.
With that in mind, Chikalicious is one of my favorites!

My favorite places for cakes that I have gotten for the holidays are:
Sundaes and Cones- ice cream cake is phenomenal but pricy
Two Little Red Hens- always do something special for the holiday in season currently

There are a lot of cake places in NYC. Is there something specific you want (e.g. Red velvet, Brooklyn Blackout, a plain ol' yellow with chocolate frosting, etc.)?
If not, here are my three places I like:
- Two Little Red Hens in the UES on 2nd Ave between East 85th & 86th Streets. (Their Brooklyn Blackout cake is ridiculously chocolatey and rich.)
- Amy's Bread (there's 3 places) is very good.
- Momofuku Milk Bar's cakes are expensive but are unusually flavored and the cake is very big.Tina

Can't go wrong with Veniero's in the East Village. It's a bit hyped, but it's been in business forever and they have a nice variety. For something smaller, there's a great bakery on the corner of 27th and 3rd that has some really great cakes. Family owned.
