Fresh Sardines? Yes you read it right...FRESH Sardines......in Connecticut?

So, I try my local fish monger who looked at me like I was crazy......

Heres the thing...went on a trip to Venice in October and I am yearning to recreate a couple of fresh sardine meals we had while there.......they were heavenly and the recipes look straightforward enough.

However, must have fresh sardines.....

So CH's....any thoughts?

New Haven...Middletown....New London triangle is easiest for me to get to.....

THANKS!

Frozen works just as well. After having grilled sardinhas on the beach in Portugal I was hooked!

"Stop & Slop" will have them on occasion - you can talk to the fishmonger there & get a bag of frozen.

"Whole Paycheck" has them frequently in their fish case [unfrozen] but at $9.95/lb.

There is an oriental store on Rt 1 in West Haven [roughly 1061 Orange Ave] with a fish counter & has sardines frequently for about $3/lb.

If you live near Milford, the fishmonger at the Shop Rite on Cherry St can get it most likely. They go down to NYC a few times a week for their fish & it shows. They guy loves his job.

I'm not sure, I only go to the Danbury one, but I would think they'd have the same selection at all locations.

Fjord Fish Market in Westport usually has them, but they are not as small as the ones in Venice - we were there this summer and bought them at the Rialto Market as often as we could...so amazing and delicious. Maybe call Fjord and ask...

I fell in love with the seafood in Venice,,,,,but the sardine dishes were my favorite....we had a great version at a cafe near the market itself! DIVINE!

It was amazing...we did a whole day cooking class with Enrica Rocca...met at the Rialto Market, bought everything in sight, went back to her place and cooked and ate and drank all afternoon...calamari, sardines, sea scallops, mussels, whole red snapper...wow. We just breaded the little butterflied sardines and fried them...so good!

I know of one place in Hartford that sells fresh (frozen) sardines, but it is in Hartford. It is a Portuguese market, Solmar Fish Market, on Park Street. I would suggest that you try other ethnic markets in your target area.

You can give Gambardella's a call if you like - his stuff is very fresh, and he can usually procure special requests for you. There are also many fans of Number One Fish Market in Hamden here.

Mazarros Italian specialty in st Petersburg has them around Christmas, fresh, very good. We especially use them for Sicilian Beccafico.
So if they can procure them I am sure you can find them too.
