Best takeout chinese in Boston?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? My favorite is East Asia in Somerville and I have been known to make the trek from the south end to Somerville for Kung Pao chicken...it is worth the hour round trip, but I'd love it if i could find somewhere just a bit closer.Have tried a few places but not much luck. Key is on fresh, good quality ingredients, light, flavorful sauces, no MSG. Just good quality and flavorful food.I 'm okay if it is americanized chinese....doesn't need to be the most authentic experience, just good, tasty food.

Thoughts?

  1. if you live in the south end, then chinatown has better options, i believe than East Asia. There are many threads that you can check on.

Yeah, I've found chinatown hit or miss. I know there are some great spots for eating in. For real authentic regional (aka cantonese or szechuan). But the few times I've tried for take out, I've been disappointed. Plus I'm looking for somewhere that will deliver, and many of those places don't.

I actually tried Golden Temple tonight and was pleasantly surprised. Again, I know for a true authentic experience this isn't the place to go. But for takeout chinese for a group, it was a good choice.

i'm practically solo in the view that Golden Temple has the best americanized chinese food I've found: the ingredients they use are high quality and things like the beef udon noodle, shanghai chicken, and golden temple special ribs are not over-gloppy and they make a mean lobster sauce. JoJo Taipei, a more authentic and more interesting asian restaurant, does deliver but i don't know if they deliver to the south end.

    2. Congratulations on asking a great question... I don't know the answer, and as a fellow South Ender, I've been fighting the temptation to experiment with the take-out from Yum-Mee on Tremont, but if I ever brave it, I promise to report back to this thread.

Yeah, well, I can save you the trouble by telling you I've done it already....Yum-Mee is a very average run-of-the mill chinese takeout spot. They have classic gloppy sauces and I'll bet use MSG. I suppose if you were looking for late night chicken fingers and fried rice they might be passable, but not at all what I'm looking for.

Golden Temple was good, but not cheap. We ordered 4 dishes and it was $68 i think? That included an approx $8 delivery charge (it's free in Brookline and I think a few of the surrounding areas, but not the south end), but did not include tip. It was worth it, but not necessarily a great value. But, like I said, food was really good. Fresh and light and just generally good-tasting, which is exactly what I was looking for. I'll still keep my eye out for a place a little bit closer, but till then I think this'll be my go-to spot when I'm looking for delivery.

That is a lot for four dishes... what did you order?

          1. re: twentyoystahs

We ordered a mango chicken ; sesame shrimp (similar price); green tea veggie noodles; tofu w/veggies; 2 orders of rice (one white; one brown)...average entree prices are $13/$14, so once you add up all 4 plus delivery charge, price is about right. Expensive, but good.

        2. New Shanghai will deliver to the South End and it is our go-to when we don't feel like making the trip to Chinatown. As delicious as eating there, it travels well, and I don't remember a delivery surcharge. The best option I'm aware of down here!

Great tip! Thanks! What are your favorites here?

            1. re: Mike5966

I've just looked at the menu and realize there's so much more to try, but we like:

              shredded pork in Peking sauce
              shredded pork with bamboo shoot
              Yu Hsiang shredded pork
              Chung Du spicy chicken
              Dan Dan noodles
baby bok choy with black mushrooms
              sauteed pea pod stems

Over the phone they said they'd deliver soup dumplings but I chickened out, not sure how well they'd hold up in transit.

              1. re: ebaba

i doubt the soup dumplings would be a problem in transit, since they don't have much soup in them to begin with...

Second this recommendation! As a fellow South End'er, New Shanghai is the best place we've found that delivers to the downtown area (as well as being one of my favorites for sit down Chinese!)
