Victoria and Vancouver Rec's... coming from SF
My Family and I will be coming to Victoria and Vancouver this christmas for 8 days. We all love amazing food, from the dives to the most expensive...
In Victoria, where should we eat for 2 nice nights out? I know im going to Red Fish Blue Fish for lunch one day, any other spots we must hit for lunch/breakfast?
In Vancouver, we're looking for one really nice dinner out, but it looks like a lot of the more highly recommended restaurants like Fuel and Cioppinos are extremely expensive... In SF im used to having a lot of great restaurants in the 25-30$ entree range. We'd like something that Vancouver specifically does very well, like pacific NW, with slightly more reasonable prices.
Additionally, what else does Vancouver do best compared to SF? I know chinese is big... I have lived in Shanghai and love XLB's... I know indian is big, but the only Indian restaurant I have heard of in Vancouver is on the very pricey side, and Im used to inexpensive indian.
Any other suggestions on any style of cuisine are appreciated... Im really looking forward to the trip!

Hey LG, I spend a fair amount of time on your home board as we visit twice a year but haven't seen any posts from you.
I often hear complaints that dining out in Vancouver is expensive. We don't find it so as we tend to frequent less pricy "ethnic" restaurants. The kind of resto you are talking about does tend to cost more as they are using locally sourced items (I know, counterintuitive that things from far away are cheaper, but that is the marketplace it seems).
Certain types of Chinese are pretty good here, such as Cantonese. We also have a reasonable selection of Shanghainese places. I am a recent convert to Ningtu on Kingsway, though strictly for XLB it'd have to be Lin's for me. Shanghai Village is a little nicer inside but I find their offerings a might inconsistent.
I do not understand why people keep posting that Vancouver has good Indian, unless they are talking about Surrey which is a suburb. I can't think of one Indian resto I'd go out of my way for in Vancouver proper, apart from Vij's which is both expensive and in a class by itself. Coming from SF, I wouldn't bother unless you have another reason to go to Surrey.
You might find it interesting to try Vietnamese here. I know there are lots of Viet restos in SF but I think we might give the less fancy ones a run for their money, and you might enjoy comparing banh mi here and there if you are a fan.
Izakaya are also worth checking out here. I know you have a couple back home but there are so many here and they can be relatively reasonable and a lot of fun.
Have a great trip and be sure to report back.
