Venezuelan fare

Charles Escoffey Oct 29, 2005 12:21 PM

Looking for a place to savor Venezuelan dishes, especially hallacas (hard to describe -- a Venezuelan creation found no where else--somewhat like a glorified superb tamale steamed in banana leaves but much more than that).

Forget it. I've been looking for an arepas, cachapas & hallacas navideñas in L.A. for the last 10 years, it's hopeless. The closest is a colombian place somewhere on Sunset, I'm sure hounds'll help fill in the blanks.

Could you be thinking of CHIBCHA?

        Yeah, Rabo, that's the one.

There's also La Maria, on Victory and Cahuenga... Colombian, though, not Venezuelan.

Thanks to you who replied...boh places are a bit far for me but I may try them.

Incidentally, I have been suggesting for years that a Venezuelan restaurant would do well in LA. Even if the hallacas would be more expensive than tamales, the public would buy them.
