Shrimp heads in Hamden/New Haven

beccabones Nov 19, 2010 11:00 AM

I recently moved to Hamden from Stamford & I have been craving shrimp heads really bad lately, but I can't find anywhere up here that sells them! I called all of the large grocery stores & some fish markets, but no one has them...
I've been trying to check out some of the asian markets, but I keep getting lost. Hopefully I'll find them soon, but until then...
Does anyone know of anywhere that I could get some raw head-on shrimp?

I was in Whole Foods Glastonbury yesterday and noticed that they had whole wild caught shrimp with the heds on. They looked good. I would say they were a nice large shrimp. Sorry, I cannot remember the whole per pound cost, but I want to say $12 or something in that range.

    Good Luck!

You might try the Gulf Shrimp Company which is just off I-84 in Plantsville. I know they sell to some high end restaurants:

Also in Plantsville Bill Close's Close Harbor Seafood has a very good selection of product as well as prepared seafood for takeout and dine-in:

I have always wondered if that gulf shrimp place is for real. So difficult to find domestic, high quality, fresh whole shrimp.

Actually I have never shopped there. Max rest. group advertises that they get their product there and I've seen somebody mention here that they've gotten food to eat outside the place that was good. There is no dine-in though. You cand see it from I-84 if you'e driving eastbound.

By the way, Close Harbor just come out with their annual Valentine's special (2 stuffed lobsters, 2 stuffed clams, lobster bisque and shrimp cocktail for $60 if you order ahead). This is rich food so DW and I get two meal out of this. We've gotten it at least three times in the past. It's a good place and this is a very good deal.

        From the Harris website:
Harris Teeter, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ruddick Corporation, is a food market chain that operates in the eight-state area of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Maryland and Delaware

So since their closest store is a 5+ hour drive from New Haven, and they have no locations anywhere near southern New England, I have no idea why you would post this here>

Any luck? #1 FishMarket has them from time to time. You may want to try the Asian market in New Haven on Orange St by Nica and Miso. They will have shrimp on occasian. I would recommend the Hong Kong market on whitney in New haven, but I dislike them. But they have a nice selection.

I don't know about the heads on shrimp, but #1 Fish Market on State Street is the best in the area. If they don't carry them as a general rule, I'll bet they'll be willing to get some for you as a special order.
