Maple Syrup Expiration Date

Unfortunately, I just found a brand new bottle of maple syrup in the back of my pantry, unopened, with an expiration date of one year ago. Is this stuff really perishable, or is it more like honey, and can last for a long time? I always refrigerate maple syrup after opening, but I find it hard to believe it can spoil so quickly when unopened and stored in a cool, dark place.

  1. It's fine. I just used some 100% pure maple syrup purchased and opened at least 2, maybe 3 years ago. It is still fine. The only thing you would have to worry about is mold and with an unopened bottle, you don't have to worry about that either.

    1. My MIL was a survivalist and left behind a ton of food.. We've been eating maple syrup and molasses from the 80's!

      1. I have brought it home from Canada, in quantity, and used it for several years. Don't worry.

        1. I very rarely pay serious attention to expiry dates on many items (speaking as someone who, for example, doesn't even like commercial yogurt until it's a month or two past date. LOL).

No worries I think with an unopened bottle of Maple Syrup.

          1. I once won a whole gallon of maple syrup from a sugar house. They told me that if it got moldy (it took years and years to use it all) that the mold was formed in the layer of water that dripped down the can from condensation. They said just skim it off and boil the syrup and pour it back into the can. (It was a can like the large olive oils come in). The syrup itself won't grow anything too much sugar. That worked fine. In years I only had to do that one time.

            1. Thanks, everyone, for the advice. I feel better about using it and will.
