Need recent suggestions for Kihei/Wailea area
We are leaving this sat for Wailea, and am very much interested in some good, local recommendations, many I have seen are several years old now, and I would like some current favs, if possible. We have reservations at Nicks Fsh house and Plantation house, but they can be changed. WIll be there with SO and 16 YO daughter, we all love sushi, asian, and any type of fresh fish. We can drive for 30-45 minutes if needed. Prefer not too stuffy or pretentious. Many thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately I did not get them before we left. We did manage some great eating however, esp at Star Noodle (yes, I did havbe the Vietnamese Crepe, was fantastic), Eskimo Candy, Nick's at Fairmont, and Local Boys Shave Ice in Kehei. Breakfast at Five Palms was good with great seating right on the water. We also liked Cuatro and 808 Bistro, which had a teriffic 3 course $25 special if you ordered by 6 pm (too early for us). It was also BYOB. Joe's bar and Grill was good but not outstanding. Very nice ambiamce however and good service. We also lunched at Wokstar, good, fast, and cheap. Only really bad meal was lunch in Hana, expensive and poor quality. Our favorite dirve was around the North-West side of the Island, strictly against rental car policy due to the very narrow road and multiple esses, but so much fun!

Hi! We just returned today from Maui, we stayed in Lahaina and Wailea. For local food, I totally recommend Da Kitchen and Kihei Caffe. The Da Kitchen in Kahului (near airport) is much much better than the express version in Kihei. Kihei Caffe has the best breakfasts on that side of the island. We went there twice for breakfast. The fried rice with eggs. Get it loco moco style and the kitchen will cheer you.
Also, Star Noodle in Lahaina is good. Make sure you order the vietnamese crepe as it's the best thing on the menu aside from the noodles (of which we only tried the garlic noodles which were good too)
For sushi, we had excellent sushi at Koiso, which is in Kihei. Just a sushi bar, sushi chef and seats for maybe 12 diners. Freshest fish on the island! We didn't go to Nicks or to Plantation house, but for finer dining we went to The Waterfront and Hula Grill. Hula had the better ambiance while Waterfront had the better food.
Hope this helps and have a great time!!-----
