High's Cafe, Comfort and Welfare Cafe, Welfare

In today's Austin paper there is an article featuring these two places. The writer claims she just stumbled on the High Cafe. Wierd. I have been working in K'ville off and on for over three years always looking for new, and decent, places to eat but have come up with a very shot list. How these two places got by me is a mystery. Anyway, does anyone out there have any experience with either of these two places? Next time I am down there, I will try to make to one of them. Thanks.J

We checked out Welfare Cafe this past weekend. It's a treat of a place. Good food (slightly expensive) in an out-of the way local. The menu is German influenced but not exclusively so. They have a dinner menu available for lunch, plus a reduced lunch menu.

I had a pork schnitzel sandwich with a side of reb cabbage on a brioche bun. The pork was perfectly cooked and the red cabbage was the right combination of tangy and sweet. I also had a bite of the grilled cheese sandwich (their only vegetarian offering) and it was quite good as well. For dessert we had apple streudal and came out piping hot implying it has been freshly baked.

All in all, a worthy drive if you are in the Boerne/Comfort area.
