It’s been tough to find Southern food in Jersey that is done correctly. Being a Jersey Boy that went to college down south many moons ago, I crave those wonderful flavors of the south. But, I recently read the rave review from the Star Ledger about Honey Browns and had to run in.
The review and the food were dead on!
My wife and I started with the Corn fritters which were crisp and just peppered enough to add some heat that was a great play against the cream fraiche. My wife also "built her own salad" which to me is just a wonderful idea, since she usually try’s to change ingredients that are in most restaurant salads anyway. (Bravo to Honey Browns for thinking ahead here).
As we moved on to our entree, I was already thinking about dessert. (Is that wrong?) But, as some as my BBQ Short Rib hit the table my focus returned. WHAT A DISH. It had to have been cooked for like 6 hours. The meat was so tender that I did not need a knife to cut it. The sauce was no bottled BBQ sauce. This was something special, like I had back in South Carolina. My wife had the Chicken Pot pie, which they say is their signature dish-(as it should be) Pure Comfort in a bowl! Crust was perfectly flaky.
But, the Sweet Potato cupcake as our dessert was the real show stopper! We've never had anything this amazing.
Even though we are foodie's, we've never really been on posting our thoughts. But I just felt that Honey Browns is a place that people need to know about because there is nothing like it in NJ.
Enjoy!
