Jamaican Jerk Pit in Ann Arbor?

What's the scoop on this place? Anybody been?

I see that they're doing the Half Off Depot thing, and I'm just wondering if it's even worth that. As well, Ann Arbor's quite the haul for me, but sometimes Donna needs to head over to U of M Hospital for a session, and if JJP was a decent place to go with the discount, it's something I might consider.

If you've been, please cite examples of specific foods you've tried there. I'm particularly interested in the proteins. Thanks!

If you're really itchin' for Caribbean food in the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area, I'd recommend G's Caribbean Delights over JJP. Given JJP's location so close to the UM campus, it tends to cater toward the student palate -- cheapish eats for kids who are trying ethnic food for the first time. Parking is also a problem at JJP.

G's is far less student-oriented and the flavors tend to be a bit stronger and more authentic. Mostly Trinidadian food, although they also have jerk chicken. Still not quite as good as Caribbean Citchen or Jamaica Jamaica in Detroit, but much better than JJP.

A friend said when she went by G's, it looked closed and that there was note on the door from the owner. I must admit, when I had driven by it this summer, I didn't think they were open for business, but they actually were then. So anyone have the scoop on this place?

Y'know, I heard a rumor that G's might have moved. Can't confirm, though.

Well, it's not so much that I'm absolutely dying for Caribbean food necessarily, so much as I was thinking about an inexpensive way to eat a lunch out at A-Squared, which would also be yummy. With this place popping up as an option at Half Off Depot, I was just wondering if it was worth buying the gift certificate or not.

Doesn't sound like it's getting an overabundance of raves from folks here.

I ate there when it was Irie in Canton and considered it competent although not as good as the late lamented Bev's in Ann Arbor. I have not yet eaten at the revamped Jerk Pit. Can't remember exactly but think I had Escovitch fish and one of the curries. Good lunches in Ann Arbor are at Korean places if you like that cuisine (two on South University, one on Church just off South U, one at William and Maynard). GREAT place with no seating: Taste Our Goods in Kerrytown shopping center. Bunch of 22-year-old women making awesome sandwiches, soups. If you're thinking of ordering to go and eating while you drive, that's an excellent choice. Not super cheap (sandwiches $6-7), but much cheaper than Zingerman's, which is in the neighborhood.

It's ok, but I haven't been there in over a year. I recall their jerk chicken sandwich on coco bread was very good. Seems to me occasionally they don't have all the items on the full menu? Highly recommend getting a Ting there (grapefruit soda). Since Bev's closed, this is the only place to get Jerk/Jamaican in the city I believe. Boy do I miss Bev's.

edit to add: don't see coco bread on their menu. I think that it can be difficult to find, which is a bummer because it is deilcious. Well, then I'm not sure what to recommend. Shoot, I'm not even sure if they have Ting on the menu now. sorry.

www.jamaicanjerkpit.com - I think this place is ran by the same guy that owned (Past Tense) Irie in Canton. I liked his stuff at Irie but his taste were more refined and not as aggressive as I like in my Jamacian cuisine. This of course it a personal think for me....I like my food to be mean to my mouth.
