Candied sweet potatoes?
I'm wanting to duplicate a pumpkin pie recipe I saw on America's Test Kitchen that called for "candied sweet potatoes". I bought a can of yams in sweet syrup but I think I need to do more with them. Can I just add some butter, sugar and cinnamon and cook for a while, or is there an 'official' formula for 'candying' these things?

Why not also go Google-ing for Candies Sweet Poatoes, even Yams, to yield almost an endless number of recipes/preparations. You're sure to find something you like that way, often with photos of the end dish. Good Luck.

Yes, I use a variation of this, from great Southern chef Bill Neal, but just bake the peeled and cut up sweet potatoes raw with orange juice, brown sugar and cinnamon. A little rum doesn't hurt. Delicious and easy, the juice makes a nice glaze.
The OP should dump the syrup in the can and start from fresh ingredients, that syrup doesn't have much flavor. Or use some of the syrup for a glaze base, but it needs fixing up. Since the canned yams are precooked, make a glaze first and reheat the yams in it in the oven until hot.

Thanks but I thought I'd explained that what I have is a can of already cooked yams in sweet syrup and I just need to doctor them up a bit I think. The recipes on line all seem to begin with uncooked potatoes. I got the idea of butter, brown sugar and cinnamon from those recipes and was just checking here to see how to adapt them to an already cooked product.

Strain out the syrup in the can, use about half, add some brown sugar, butter and cinnamon, reduce that down a bit until thickened, pour over potatoes and heat in oven until hot. A little squeeze of lemon or a few lemon slices added to while baking are nice with sweet potatoes.
