Restaurants Rediscovered
I just revisited a restaurant I hadn't been to for at least 10 years...and thought it was fantastic.
We ate at Messis last Friday - the food was inventive and delicious, the service was great and the prices were incredibly reasonable. And the room - sleek, comfortable and you could actually hear conversations. I definitely won't wait another 10 years to go back.
Are there any restaurants you've forgotten about that you've recently visited..and you've been pleasantly surprised about?

I went back to Tabule on Yonge a few weeks ago after an absence of about 4 years. It was very good and reasonably priced.

Le Paradis and 93 Harbord
Mr. Vuitton and I not been to either in over 2 years. They just kind of "fell off" our rotation, so we went back to each a few months ago.
Especially for the price, Le Paradis is excllent. Very good staples, well prepared, comforting, not terribly inventive, but just good,
93 Harbord - very nicely prepared, tasty food with lovely atmosphere

One of the first Middle Eastern restos in north Toronto was Sababa, in a large plaza on Steeles Ave. W. between Yonge St. and Bathurst St. It used to be a regular stop for me, but then Middle East competition sprung up in the neighborhood. I was lured away to Meron (now out of action), Me Va Me, Shoom Shoom and assorted other decent joints. Until one night when the lineup at the popular Me Va Me proved impossible. So I drove east a few minutes to Sababa - and discovered it all over again. A large, barn-like utilitarian space, just as I recalled it. Actually, I hardly ever get to the main dishes because all the soups, starters, salads, and hot and cold appetizers are so tasty (it helps that the chef isn't shy about garlic). Only Tabule comes close in the range and execution of its starters. At Sababa, two can easily share five or six modestly-priced small dishes, and eat handsomely. And the bill comes in at substantially less than $40, all in. An extra plus: rarely a lineup. The Middle East food buffs are all standing in line at Me Va Me. Sababa also has an attached take-out facility with the same starter dishes, which I've never patronized, but which friends tell me serve a mean falafel sandwich. It's a little gem.
