There's a Sammy's Woodfired Pizza in the Del Mar Highlands shopping center in Carmel Valley, at the intersection of Del Mar Heights Rd and El Camino Real, and it's good for a casual dinner of things like thin crust pizza or salads and they also offer some fairly nice Middle Eastern dishes. Nothing spectacular but good.
Sammy's is more consistent than Alborz, which I would love to love, but unless you're going for the lamb shank, I've had nothing but hit or miss meals (mostly miss) there although I keep giving them another shot.
I really wish we had some decent hole in the wall places in Del Mar! We stay home and cook most nights, and if we do go out these days, we mostly head 20 minutes north to Kaito for fabulous sushi...oh wait, I just had a cgfan moment, weaving in that reference to Kaito! ;)

Just drive a bit more South on the 5 and enjoy the outdoor gardens at Karl Strauss.
http://www.karlstrauss.com/PAGES/Eats/SorrentoMesa.htmlThe place mentioned by Daantaat on Del Mar Heights (NW corner at the 5) is called Alborz.
Smashburger has burgers (apparently commodity meat, although I never ask about the source of meat for a $6 burger; meat is seasoned then smashed onto the grill and tastes good) and chicken (grilled or crispy) sandwiches made with a choice of breads, cheeses and toppings. Sides include fries (regular and sweet potato) topped with olive oil, rosemary and garlic, onion haystacks, vegetable frites, fried pickles. They also have hot dogs and salads. Milkshakes are made with Haagen Daaz ice cream. www.smashburger.com

re: Cathy
Cathy, thanks for reminding me of Alborz. It's been a while, but their lamb shank is to die for... And BTW for whatever reason, cultural or just that restaurant's style, every dish there can feed two. Be prepared to take home plenty of leftovers! Just a caution about their menu. Though not an issue for me, vegetarians need to beware that some items by their English names can be quite misleading... Case in point is their Vegetarian Stew, which is by no means vegetarian (but very good). If I recall correctly I think their Veg Stew was a Gormeh Sabzi (w/my tortured spelling...).

re: honkman
I actually haven't eaten there myself yet. Though in the past couple of weeks, several friends and colleagues, a couple of whom are serious and sophisticated foodies, raved that SB was the best they've had. Must be a matter of taste since I've also seen comments similar to yours.

There isn't a lot in the area for mid-price or hole in the wall. Places tend to either be high end or chains.
There is a Persian place off Del Mar Heights that is decent. Unfortunately, the name escapes me.
If you're ok w/ a food court atmosphere, Sitar and the Afghan place in the Staples food court off Sorrento Valley road are pretty good. I think only Sitar is open at night.
Iris on Carmel Valley Road, west of the 5, is decent and mid-priced. Won't blow your socks off but it's decent for the price point.
Americana on Camino del Mar is ok, although we've only been there for breakfast lately.
The ultimate default is Souplantation off Carmel Valley Road and the 56 freeway.

re: daantaat
the Persian place you're thinking of is probably Alborhz. Pretty decent for the area but that's not saying much.
My recommendation is to go to Roberto's on Carmel Valley Rd heading to the beach and get a California burrito.
EDIT: looks like someone got it already...i should read the whole thread
