Heritage turkeys? Any body tried them and where can I get in southeastern CT or New Haven, Middletown areas?

I am about to go to my local purveyor of turkeys and place my order tomorrow or Wed.

I began to think about some articles I had read on heritage turkeys and made me think of trying them.

Anyone know where to score one this year in the southeastern Connecticut region - willing to venture over to New Haven or Middletown as well

Also - anyone out here have any experience in cooking and eating a heritage turkey?

Whole Foods is selliing "Heirloom" turkeys (raw) that they refer to as "of the heritage variety". You can order on line and pick up at your closest store.

For the past few years, we've done heritage turkeys - love them. A lot of people brine them, we don't. We just roast them like a garden variety turkey, baste often, keep an eye on it. The farmer I used is going exclusively with Connecticut Farm Fresh Express this year - here's their website:

Just FYI, last year I think I paid $7/lb - don't know what this year's price is.

Pipenta has been to Ekonk Farms in Sterling, where they do heritage birds also. See here ....
