Need a birthday place with a good gourmet burger!

Would love to go to the Harbord Room, but they can't accommodate a group our size (they do make it quite difficult to make a reservation there). Looking for something similar - we tried Sidecar last year and didn't love it. We went to Tatti Bistro the year before and it was quite good.

Looking for something with a burger and steak frites on the menu that will appeal to the adventurous food fearing dads in the group. And prefer to try a new(er) place.

Thanks for your help!

Beast? They have a burger, and steak (although not steak frites specifically). They do well with red meat, but have changed the menu substantially since I was there, so I can't comment too much on other dishes.

How about the Queen and Beaver?

Would Nota Bene do it? I loved their burger.

Love the burger at Nota Bene too but I'll point out they've raised their prices by a couple dollars across the board. This includes the previously $19 burger, which is now $21.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think Nota Bene has the best burger in town, but it's a bit too fancy/sophisticate a place for our family. I've heard good things about the Queen and Beaver, but the menu looks VERY gamey, no?

The bar menu is pretty straightforward - the dinner menu is a bit more adventurous - but there should be something for everyone. The food is really great and fun atmosphere/drinks.

To be honest kosherdill, the first time I had the hand-chopped burger at the Queen and Beaver, I couldn't stop singing its praises. But the last time I had it, the meat was fatty and too chewy, and the texture was off. I really didn't enjoy it. I'd be willing to try it one more time, based on my first attempt... but I felt I had to disclose that consistency may be an issue.

Weezie's has a great burger and some prettysafe, but very well executed dishes. Reasonably priced as well.

Second Weezie's! My favourite bistro in the city. Well priced and well executed, like jamesm says.

I had the same experience at Queen and Beaver as your last one, Yum2MyTum... the burger had far too high a percentage of tough, chewy fat for me. Although, the fries were fantastic. It may be just my own taste (maybe so) but personally I would not say that their menu has something for everyone.

                  I agree with Beast.

Their burger is amazing, had it last week, it will not disappoint.
I had it with aged cheddar (no pemeal) and the side of tatter tots.

The Pig's Head pasta is also worth a try.

I haven't been there yet, but next to Cravings on Yonge is a new restaurant called The Burger Cellar. It looked gorgeous and I perused the menu - which had many types of gourmet burgers. I haven't read much about it, but it looked good.

Thanks everyone! The good news is that after all of this, the Harbord Room actually called me back and gave me the reservation. But, I'm going to check out the Queen and Beaver on the weekend. I haven't heard anything but average-to-bad reviews of the Burger Cellar, but it's probably worth a shot. It does look nice! Cheers...
