Cake date - Cape Cod

Just promised a friend to take her out for cake. Her birthday happens this month.

It'll probably be an evening thing,

She's perfectly happy with The 99 and will be glad to go someplace nearby (Hyannis.) I'm ready to go anywhere from Provincetown to Plymouth.

Dinner may be included, but maybe not.

The first place that comes to mind is Colombo's on Main Street, Hyannis.

But, I'm sure you guys can do better.

I'd want to go to Cafe Boulangerie, just off the Hyannis Airport Rotary but would call first to inquire about cake: 508.778.8588 Link: http://www.paindavignon.com/

Gee Afar, this rec surprises me a bit. I don't feel any of the warmth that is described so elequently in your sushi thread when I go to Pain D'Avignon. Love the bread and occassional sandwich, but it's generally provided with nary a smile. And no matter how they try to dress it up, its a metal warehouse surrounded by other metal warehouses next to the airport. The French Pastry/cake thing is a good thought though. Maybe a trip to PB Boulangerie in Welfleet fits the bill? (Similar service but nicer ambiance and superior pastries.)

I'd go for PB. If you say bonjour it really warms them up, and really the pastries are to die for.
If it were last month I'd say go to Connie's in PTown; fabulous cakes.

Agree with you ccg & mom that a drive to Welfleet and PB would be most enjoyable if the weather cooperated and there is available time allowed for the trip. As for Cafe B at the Rotary, the chef is accomplished, the style of service is decidedly not Japanese, Pain D'A has a hard-earned and excellent reputation, and the atmosphere has it's own cache which one would love or hate. I agree, this last point does present a risk for a "special" dinning experience. So, I'd add: if it's convenient, pop in for lunch and check the place out. If you find it hip and a squirreled away gem and they have the cake - you might have found a new place to hang out.

Is it too late to say thank you?

We did go to Embargo and then on to Columbo's. And ate way, way too much.

I think we like the short rib best at Embargo, but it was all good. The lamb ribs, coconut shrimp, scallops (but seriously, 2 scallops to a plate?) And of course the alcohol!

Columbo's desserts also good, but next time remind me - one dessert is plenty for two people.

Looking forward to trying Connie's in Provincetown. Never heard of it, but if there's cake, I'm there.

So glad to hear my rec worked out for you. Thanks so much for reporting back!

To be honest, Columbo's came first to my mind when I started reading your post. It's a decent pastry case. I love the vibe of the place. And it's on Main St. so you could make it part of a birthday stroll. Start with a drink at the Island Merchant, then share appetizers or an antipasto at Alberto's. Have a couple of tapas at Embargo, and finish with a cappachino and desert at Columbo's. I think any one, or up to all four of those stops could be enjoyable.
