What on earth has happened to this site??

I have a list of complaints a mile long about Chowhound since it got eaten by the big man, but won't go there right now. I'm rarely on, so perhaps this has been happening for a while, but now when I do a search, it shows a list of results and then there is some sort of content blocking the results. Sort of like a pop up ad, but it isn't. Has anyone else experienced this? It's seriously obnoxious.

  1. Hey,
It took me about two weeks (not seriously) to figure out that if you just scroll down a little bit, the search results will be directly underneath that pop-up, which ends up only being about 2-3" long. I know what you mean though - totally ill contrived and annoying and confusing. Hope that helps.

Is the pseudo 'pop-up' you are talking about the advanced search options?

If you scroll way to the right of the "Choose a board" and "Saved Boards" tabs, there is the word "view" and two tabs. One expands search and other options, the other collapses them. If you click on the collapse tab next to the word 'view', then it should eliminate your 'pop-up' problem.

On my notebook the expanded search is a bit startling. There is a lag, so I'll start scrolling down the search list and then the screen jumps when the advanced search option drops down.

After three months of this, I still find the site totally unintuitive and have to think everytime I want to search or do other activities. So I don't search often or do a lot of other activities on the site.

I do like that a banner has returned at the top of the screen with links to current hot topics on Chow such as Thanksgiving.

While I'm sure I won't get an answer, it doesn't hurt to ask. Does Chow really think this is a good design and just a matter of getting used to? Post after post in the last three months have repeated over and over the confusing design issues. Are there any plans to make this a site that is easier to navigate?

On very old versions of Internet Explorer (like 6.0) you can't clear the stuff. I used google until I was able to upgrade IE.

It is actually the text that normally runs along the bottom of the page, relocated, and it dOES cover some of the searched content results.

SSOOOOO annoying. I HATE it. Fire the moron who flubbed that code.

Same happens when I use the Search function (from any point on the site) and I'm surprised it hasn't been fixed. The middle of the entire Search results page is out of alignment; running over the ad area and dislodging the layout from mid page to the bottom. Since I know how Search results are suppose to look (& once did) I work around it but it looks very unprofessional.

        2. chuck IE in the wastebin and use Mozilla Firefox, far fewer problems (and security risks) it also doesn't "nanny" you as much.

          1. Are you using an older version of Internet Explorer? Versions 6 and earlier don't tend to play nice with the site's design.

            1. Within the past couple of days, they changed the format of display of search results, so that the window with all the search options (boards, dates, etc) is no longer displayed and can no longer block the view of the results. Instead, it now shows a button to click to the right, "ADVANCED SEARCH", which you can click to see those options if you want to override the default options. So this will probably eliminate the problem for you!
