Greenmarket cranberries?
Does anyone know if there is a vendor at the greenmarket that sells fresh local cranberries? No one at the W. 97th St. greenmarket does. I thought perhaps someone at Union Square might but I've been checking out Lucy's Report and I don't see any mention of cranberries.
Am I stuck buying the same old plastic bag, usually Ocean Spray, at the store?
Thanks for any info.

FWIW, Ocean Spray is a cooperative --see: www.oceanspray.com/about/our_history.aspx and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ocean_Sp... --so it is very likely that bagged Ocean Spray cranberries actually come from a bog in southern NJ. At worst, they come from Cape Cod MA. They are not highly processed products.
ETA: Chowhound does not not seem to keep the closing parenthesis in the wikipedia link. You'll have to click on the link on the error page that comes up.

I have seen them at the Union Sq Farmers market. Sorry, I could not tell you which vendor. They are probably from Cranberry, NJ.

I remember in past years there was a truck at the Union Square Greenmarket that sold only cranberries by the pound. Does anyone else remember this vendor?

re: KayMae
KayMae, maybe I saw you there today??? I too went and purchased the cranberries. They are smaller than the ones you buy in the bag but they smell good.
The man said the berries do come from MA. So I guess no one from NJ is bringing them in. Interesting. A few days ago, I did leave an email message with the NJ Cranberry Growers group (linked to elsewhere in this thread) but have not heard anything back. But now I'm really curious as to why no NJ cranberries coming into the city (esp. since that's certainly closer than MA).
Thanks to all of you for your help here!
ps - and I'm excited about my purple carrot purchase too. :)

This site may give you some leads: http://njcranberries.org/ (and it looks like they are growing cranberries less than a hundred miles from NYC...so I have to figure that you all are getting "local" cranberries up there someplace).

re: LNG212
Perhaps if you contact Mr. Lee http://njcranberries.org/contact.html he can point you in the direction of some greenmarkets in NY that have locally grown NJ cranberries.

I don't think anyone grows cranberries within 100 miles of NYC, which would mean there's no such thing as local cranberries.
