Ice Cream in San Diego, Ice Cream Cakes?

royaljester Nov 15, 2010 12:22 AM

What are some good places for ice cream? There are some flavors I like at Baskin Robins, but there must be something better. In Hawaii there's a great chain called Lapperts which is really good. Fully creamy, lots of good flavors. Their plain vanilla is wonderful. The closest place so far is at the Hotel Coronado, which is a 40 minutes drive.

Places we've tried as far as I remember:
Baskin Robins - Good Jamocha almond fudge (i.e. much better than Dryer's)
Golden Spoon - Like their toppings
Cold Stones - Good if you want mixed ice cream
Hotel Coronado - Very good, but very far and tourist prices ;-)

Although Hawaii isn't what you'd think of when it comes to food (their fine dining is very limited), they do have some excellent niches in food when it comes to shaved ice (amazing and cheap), ginger ale (real ginger ale), bbq soy sauce corn, and finally Lappert's ice cream. These things made our vacation (the view and ocean were nice too). Thanks to chowhound we've checked off shaved ice from our list:

Also looking for a good ice cream cake. My wife won't eat Baskin Robin's, and Trader Joe's discontinued the brand I used to get.

Thank you!

For gelatto, please.. I hope you're sitting down, I like Costco's food court, they also have some pretty good ice cream cakes in the warehouse. As for ice cream, I'm a Foster's junkie!

The gelato is only at the Morena Costco location. It is excellent.

RJ- Niederfranks and Mariposa for ice cream. I haven't had an ice cream cake in decades.

        Second both those choices.

Try Maggie Moo's for ice cream cakes. WAY better than Baskin Robbins.

I have only had Mariposa's ice cream once - during the Adams Avenue Street Fair this year. It was a very hot day when most any ice cream would taste great, but I was very disappointed by their Cherry Vanilla. It was tasteless. Are there any flavors that stand out?

I am not a sweets person, so the butter pecan, pistachio, banana walnut and lemon ice creams stand out for me. If it is hot out, I like the lemon and lime sherbets and the watermelon sorbet.

Thanks! The Cherry Vanilla was nostalgic for me - I love Breyer's from way back. I'll give a try to some other flavors since they are walking distance for me.

Le Crepe Fraiche in Sorrento Valley has an exceptional cherry frozen yogurt. They use very good fruit for their yogurt flavors..non-fruit flavors are okay.

I'll check out costco for the cakes, but aren't they going to be big?

Costco's gelatto is generous and great for the price, but I'd also recommend Chuao - it's expensive but much better. Try their samples, some of them are amazing.

surprisingly, Costco's ice cream cakes are not ginormous.

For ice cream Mariposa's is my favorite. They make their own ice cream and have a drink menu that include a Black & White and an horchata style malt.

For gelato try Pappalecco and Chocolat. Chocolat has two locations in Hillcrest and downtown. We prefer the one downtown which is a nice place to end a night after some cocktails. Pappalecco had also two locations in Little Italy and Hillcrest. Little Italy seems to be the better one. Overall we found the gelato at Chocolat to be more consistent and flavorful.

Agreed that Pappalecco's in LI is better than the Hillcrest location, but I like the food better in Hillcrest. I've only tried the gelato at Chocolat in Hillcrest and really, really liked it. Didn't like the noise level so much, hard to a carry on a conversation with the person sitting across the small table.

Mariposa is the best, Dick and Anna are always on top of great flavors, they make everything on site, using great ingredients. I refuse to go anyplace else. You should call them and see if they can make one for you.

There's actually a Lappert's in SD County, between Scripps Ranch & Poway. If you're on the 15, exit Scripps Poway Pkwy and head east several miles, it's on the right side in the same plaza as Carl's Jr. I don't know if they have ice cream cakes though.

Costco in Poway also has the gelato at the food court.

The Lapperts here and the one in Hawaii have different corp parents. They both claim to be the true Lapperts. I thought the one in Honolulu was better, but then having a scoop of macadamia fudge while sitting on the beach looking at Diamond Head may have something to do with that.

Interesting! Well we know our ice cream so will try and report back on the similarity/differences. Gotta try even if it's a long shot. =)

The Lappert's we tried was in the Hilton Resort near Waikiki. To confirm stevie's post that chain seems to be Hawaii only. But any place that dares to compare is worth a look!

Lappert 's is real creamy and a total splurge, don't know if you'll be able to match it, but please get back with your testing.

There is a Lappert's ice cream in San Diego in Scripps Ranch.

I'd have to do a side by side, but it tasted the same to me, although I agree a little Aloha time certainly improves the flavor.....of anything! The Lapperts on Scripps Poway also has Dole Whip.

Tried Lappert's again 2 days ago. Went with the seasonal pumpkin and it was very good. The pineapple Dole Whip was just as tasty as what I had on Waikiki.

For some hipster with you gelato, I'd go with my neighborhood coffeehouse/gelateria Gelato Vero.

Tried Mariposa's recently based on this thread. They have some pretty uncommon flavors which is refreshing. Would recommend if you're in the area, which for me was after a trip to Super Cocina (also from CH)
