365 Brand Canned Pumpkin - low quality?

Has anyone found the 365 brand canned pumpkin to be poor quality? I had never had it, but found it on sale at Whole Foods and bought 6 cans. I have opened one, and it was watering, stringy, and fibrous. I'm wondering if I got a bad can or if I can expect it to all be like this. If so, I need to get something different before making Thanksgiving pies for a large family gathering.

Yeah, in my experience, it's 1.) paler and 2.) more watery or stringy than Libby's canned pumpkin. I don't think I've ever really had a can as good as Libby's. Or maybe it's just that I'm used to Libby's and compare that as my "usual" canned pumpkin...

The flavor, however, is almost the same to me.

Wow. I am so interested to see this post! It's somehow cathartic to read that I am not alone after such an upsetting baking experience. I just ruined the all-important Thanksgiving pumpkin pie by using canned pumpkin I bought at Whole Foods called "Farmer's Market Organic Canned Pumpkin." I was nervous when opening the can as it contained sopping wet, runny pumpkin pureé. Being used to Libby's which is substantial and firm out of the can (actually a bit more like the times I've cooked my own pumpkin), I was worried. The custard was extremely thin, but I cooked it anyway and now, as the pie cools along side a test ramekin of custard-only, there is a pool of liquid forming fast. We all just tasted the custard and the texture is lumpy and runny. I hope you'll stay away from this product and avoid the mistake!

Ever since Whole Foods "Sold Out" to a private Equity firm, The equity co. is now the largest stockholder' there seem to be many quality changes, and many new products that do not measure up to the "old" whole Foods. Maybe it is just my impression!!??!!??

No... I think you're onto something, ospreycove. My husband and I are always noting that the company seems determined to give you LESS for MORE lately. There are many examples, but the best is that WF bakery used to make some wonderful walnut-raisin breakfast rolls. They were so satisfying, one could sustain you all morning. About 2 years ago, we noticed that the number of raisins and walnuts was suddenly cut in half and the roll had shrunk by about 1/3! It's texture changed too. Yet the price mysteriously went up -- from .60 a piece to .85. I'm steering a little off-topic here, but perhaps this sheds light on the 365 canned pumpkin mush mystery from the OP.

I'd return all 6 and buy Libby.

or Trader Joe's Organic - also consistently good, and even cheaper than what some places charge for Libby's!

I've also been happy with Oregon based Farmer's Market Organic Pumpkin. But TJs is cheaper when available.

Libby's or Farmer's Market Organic (also available at Whole Foods) are the only two I've used and I'm happy with both.

no you wouldn't - have you ever read through some of the "best of TJ's" or "yay/nay" threads? the list of nays is just as long as (if not longer than) the list of yays/yeas!

                feel better? ;)

Jancita, that brand is really hit or miss. I've had some cans that seemed to have added water--had to strain before using--and others that were perfectly fine. If all your cans are from the same lot, they might all be bad, but rather than wasting them, why not open a couple and if they're good, freeze them. A week in the freezer won't degrade their quality, so you should still be able to use them in your pies.

If you find it too stringy, try running it through the blender, and then a strainer.
I wouldn't write it off yet. I make sweet potato pie and use fresh and they can at times be very stringy. This is what I do to get rid of that problem. If you have a food processor all the better, smooth it out with a tad bit of cream.

Since moving to Maine 30 years ago, I have preferred the Maine made "One Pie" brand. Always good quality. Of course you won't be able to find that brand outside of New England
