Bulk Oyster Bargain at Needham Restaurant Depot

Folks have asked about this repeatedly.

RD had:

- Southern oysters - $34.95/100 ct. Not sure I'd eat these raw, but for cooking...

- Blue Points $44.95 / 100 ct

They also started selling fresh seafood. Not exactly a fabulous selection, but I picked up some dry bay scallops that looked nice for $7 / lb.

Again, perhaps not the best source for seafood, but I do wonder if those blue points are any good...

Where do the Blue Points originate?

Just curious: why wouldn't you eat the southern oysters raw?

I know that the much celebrated ones I had in Nola went uneaten, both raw and chargrilled. Cold water oysters only for me!

when ni lived on the gulf coast of florida those local oysters were insanely cheap bar food -- like 10 cents each, so i ate them then, but they were flabby and without that fabulous brininess you get from virginicus.

I've had warm water oysters raw and they really are just fine. In general they tend to be flabbier with murkier flavors. Then add to the equation that these are cheapo ones at a place not necessarily known for their seafood and... I'd cook em.

SG, how strict are they about memberships? I don't have a restaurant...

            I don't have a resto either...

To join all you need is a commercial tax id #. I'd give you one of my membership cards but I gave them all away. That said it is insanely easy to get a tax id # for an imaginary business...
