Need recommendations for restaurant/bar for upcoming weekend trip
I'll be spending a weekend in Dallas for a friend's wedding later this month. The wedding's on Saturday, and there's nothing planned on Friday night for the guests that aren't in the wedding party, so my out of town friends and I (coming from DC) are looking for a place to have dinner and drinks on Friday. We are staying at the Doubletree Hotel-Campbell Center. If there is something that is not too far away, that would be great, but we are willing to take a cab a ways for a good place. I did a search of the immediate area around the hotel on Yelp and didn't see much, but I don't know Dallas at all. So: anybody have recommendations for a good restaurant that would be fun for a group of 4-5 people? The type of food is not that important as long as it's good; my friends are not hardcore foodies but they are all somewhat serious about food. A place that does regional/Texan/southern cuisine creatively would be great but that isn't essential if nothing fits the bill. A talented bartender would be a plus. If there's a great bar separate from a restaurant that people would recommend going to, I'd love to hear about that as well.
Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.
Looking at Google maps I see Blue Mesa Grill is real close. I have not been to this location but I love the one closer to my house. Its sort of local SW flavors. Service is always good at the Addison location. This would be easy to get everyone there and I think they have a bar.
I hate chain restaurants but 5 locations is not much of a chain. If you go I'd recommend the Adobe Pie.
Henderson is probably the best/closest place for you to head. You'd definitely need a cab.
if you're looking for cocktails, I'd suggest Neighborhood Services Tavern, on Henderson. They have interesting and well-constructed house cocktails, and it's also one of the few places around where they do the classics well. I often just tell the bartender which spirit I want and let him produce something - usually delicious. The food is also good - emphasis on comfort food, but generally well executed and with some interesting twists. Off the top of my head... buffalo-style quail is really good, great steak frites, The Schnitz, the burger, fresh pastas... all solid choices. They don't take reservations, but you can call in advance and they'll put you on the wait list, which is a good idea - they're usually pretty slammed on Friday.
If you're more interested in Mexican, I'd suggest hitting up Cafe San Miguel (a bit further down Henderson) and then moving next door to Barcadia for beers afterward (decent selection. They have liquor too, but nothing too compelling). Friday is not my favorite night for Barcadia... but it could still be fun. Or... you could eat at CSM and then cab (or ~15' walk) back up Henderson to Vickery Tavern for a somewhat better beer selection.
