A Week in Tokyo with my Family
My family and I are going to Tokyo for a week over Thanksgiving. We've never been, but we're all pretty big fans of Japanese food, and we really want to try to cover a lot of different types of Japanese food while we're there. So we're looking for recommendations.
For background, we live in LA, so we've got some pretty good sushi restaurants here that do great Omakase (Nozawa, Sasabune). We're all relatively adventurous, and we'll certainly try just about anything once, short of maybe horse sashimi. Price-wise, we're pretty flexible, but we'd like to keep it all within reason. We're staying in a hotel in Shinjuku, so anything not too far from there is helpful, but not essential, and we won't have a kitchen, so for us to sample, we need prepared food in restaurants, or at least street food. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll have the ability to cook from ingredients.
OK - so here's what we aim to find during the week:
-Handmade Soba Noodles
-Udon and/or Ramen
-Tempura - either the cook at the table variety, or a restaurant that does it for you (or both)
-Somewhere to eat in or around Tsukiji
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Have you done a search for the various things you are interested in on the chowhound board? There are lots of discussions / recommendations already covering most of what you are after. For example, Tsukiji has been discussed many times, as has sushi, tempura, ramen, etc.
I don't have any suggestions, but I just had to reply because my family and I are also going to Tokyo over Thanksgiving, from Los Angeles! If I find something while I am there, I will post and hopefully you will do the same. Have a wonderful trip!
