Galatoires?
Please help by explaining what the experience - time wise and food wise - might be if we try to go to Galatoires on our last day there for brunch/lunch before heading to the airport. This would be on a Sunday. Please reply if you have experienced this experience! (well maybe not the airport part!)

I've had to do it before a Jetblue flight back to NYC. It was relatively well-timed, and they even made me a couple of Sazeracs for the road.

I have had lunch at Galatoire's as well as many many restuarnts in NOLA on Sunday before heading home. I drive home so I don't drink so we arrive at the opening at Noon and leave about 2 hours later. You should have no problem if your flight leaves NOLA around 5/6 PM. Check out of your hotel, ask them to hold your luggage and go to Galatoire's. After lunch get your baggage and head to the AP.

Unless you have a late flight, it would be an eat-and-run and that is emphatically not the way to eat there.

Well, you can "hang all day" on any day....and I don;t think Friday is the best. It's a combination of locals and wanna-be sorts with the odd tourist there to see What It Is All About. I've done lunch-and-a-flight several times (just to avoid airline food and have a doggie bag it is worth it) but I don't think you can understand the place just running in and wolfing down a meal. If, on Sunday, you got in at noon and you had until 3:30 or 4:00 before decamping (this would mean a flight of no earlier than 6:00 or 6:30) then you might be able to do it. But, if you do it right, you won't want to leave. Plus, many people cavil about having to dress up and because, with a few exceptions, no one flies in coat and tie (or the distaff equivalent) anymore, lots of people aren't keen on combining Galatoire's and travel.

oh -thanks for the info - hadn't realized the dress code! - are there many place in NOLA that adhere to that - we have become so much more informal in most places in the country that I wouldn't have occurred to me to be concerned with that - especially during the day! Is there a difference between a Sat vs Sun Jazz brunch at Commanders?

re: smilingal
In all these years I have only gone to Sunday brunch at Commander's and even then not more than once or twice a year.
If your flight is late enough, Commander's on Sunday would be a perfect fit becuase it does not go on all day and they are quite good at getting you in-and-out. You could then have a liesurely Galatoire lunch Saturday afternoon starting at 2:00 or whenever.
You can get away with a more "casual" dress-up at Commander's but N.O. tends to keep vestiges of formality and especially on Sunday I'd suggest something more than "new denim."
