Il Sogno

We are looking for a special occasion place to have a chefs tasting menu and could not get into Catch or Rouge. The only place we could get a reservation is Il Sogno, as it is a Saturday during Christmas party season. Has anyone been to Il Sogno? What are your thoughts or any other suggestions?

Thanks

My wife and I have had the chef's tasting menu at both the Chef's Table (Kennsington Riverside Inn) and Rush, and I'd fully recommend both, as the food was exceptional. For atmosphere, I rate Rush slightly better, and the overall experience a little better. You wouldn't be disappointed with either, but definitely think of trying Rush. If I can make a suggestion, if you're already spending good money on getting the tasting menu, it's really nice if at least one of you orders the wine pairings to go with. Really puts the dinner over the top in my opinion.

We just came back from dinner at Il Sogno. Was at Chef's Table twice last month ago, and have to say, Il Sogno is so much better. I had the meatball appetizer and my wife had the shrimp appetizer. Both were fantastic. The meatballs were flavourful, in a really nice tomato sauce. The shrimp were large, perfectly cooked, with arugular, beans and pancetta. We then shared the tortelini bolognese as a secondi. My wife said it was the closest pasta dish that she has had that reminded her pastas in Italy, and I agreed. For the main, I had the veal cheeks, and my wife had the special, steehead salmon in a beurre blance sauce. The difference for me was the attention to detail, and the emphasis on taste. I found that Chef's Table spent moe time on putting together a dish that looked more complex, and had more ingredients on the plate. But in the end I would say that taste wins out. The dishes were rich, and rustic. Possibly more simple at times, but just with amazing flavour. We keep forgetting Il Sogno when we think of the best restaurants in Calgary, but our next visit will be soon.

        sackman:

Nice to read a more contemporary and fortunately, positive review of Il Sogno.

I have not been since Chef di Genarro (sp?) left but while he was there, I quite enjoyed the restaurant during our visits to Calgary.

I haven't been back since Chabot left...just haven't had the opportunity. Il Sogno remains one of my best, most memorable meals in Calgary. So glad to hear Il Sogno is still top notch. Thanks sackman

I have been several times, although not in the last year. All of the times I have gone, it has been superb.

Been there once, about 2 years ago though so don't know how it is now, but then I thought it was really good.
