Any locals have suggestions for a great Italian restaurant in Baltimore? Me and my friend are going to Baltimore for the day on Saturday and are really craving Italian. Also my friend hates seafood ! We've looked at all the little italy menus and have not been impressed. We just want good idea food and a place that makes their own pasta.
So what's the best baltimore's got?!
I lived in Baltimore 25 years ago, when I was in college, and even then, everyone said avoid Little Italy. How these places - Sabatino's, Germano's, Chiapparelli's, Da Mimmo, D'Alessio's - have stayed in business all these years just baffles me. I didn't know much about food back then, but these were the places to go and so we went. Once. Never again. Best that can be said is total lack of imagination. Throw some red sauce on it and give it an Italian-sounding name, add some tiramisu, and you have a total snoozefest of maybe mediocre food.
Sotto Sopra offers excellent Italian food. Their veal chop is exceptional. They offer a multitude of risottos, pastas, etc. The vegetables that accompany the entrees are sensational and not just an afterthought. FoiGras

Little Italy is usually disappointing.
My favorite place for Italian is Cinghiale -- they definitely make their own pasta; their stuffed pastas -- the sausage-stuffed pasta is a regular, but i've also had rabbit-stuffed and meltingly delicate lobster and artichoke pasta that are out of this world.
They can be a little pricey if you have too much fun there (I've done it a couple times!), but their "Grandmother's Kitchen" special (3 courses, $30) is a pretty good deal.
