Italian in Yorkville - Mistura or L'Unita?

Hey,

Long time lurker, first time poster! Would like to seek the advice of fellow foodies since I'm stuck at a standstill - Mistura or L'Unita? I've never been to either restaurant, but I've heard great things about both. I am also considering Malena as well. So of the 2 (actually 3), which would be your pick?

Just so you know, this is for a surprise birthday dinner for the SO, with pre-/post-dinner drinks at the Roof Lounge included in the plans.

Cheers!

Tough choice. Both good. Mistura is more upscale in the ambiance and prices (if memory serves). The food is delicious at both but once again, more formal at Mistura. So I guess it all depends what kind of evening you want to have. The only thing I will say for Mistura is that the service a little more consistent there; I have heard stories at L'Unita of less-than-polite service.

I agree with Toronto Fastfoodie, though I would note that I've never had bad service at L'Unita (not to say that others might not have), I find L'Unita to be very warm and romantic, but in a decidedly more casual way than Mistura. Mistura is definitely more of a special occasion destination. Also, I have no idea how old you and your SO are, but I'd say that there's a slightly older crowd at Mistura than L'Unita.

Haven't been to Malena yet, so can't comment.

L'Unita can have a more interesting choice and is less pretentious.

I wouldn't say more interesting choices, just maybe more approachable. If I recall, they have some very delicious pizza on the menu whereas at Mistura they are more apt to put a fresh truffle pasta special on the menu. With that in mind, the waiter at Mistura did one of the classiest things ever: when he told us about the truffle special, he also told us how expensive it was since it is quite a bit more than any other pasta dish on the menu.

I do not think Mistura is pretentious. It is definitely a better choice. Especially for a worthy occasion.
I've never been to Malena so I cannot comment there. Heard it 's pricey.
Mistura is pricey, more upscale but great food and ambiance.
( maybe you even can meet the famous Massimo with his great big moustache! heard he is a nice guy)

Good for you. I think you made the right choice but then again, Mistura is one of my favourite spots in the city.

You must order the beet risotto and the lamb rib appetizer. Fantastic!!!!

Yes, I'm not a huge beet fan, but even I love the risotto.

                Well have fun !
I hope it does live up to your expectations, but then.... usually with so much hype, there is bound to be something that lets you down. ( Like the big overated hype on Enoteca Sociale.... the critics all raved, i found it loud , dumpy and not so great food at all)
BUt I hope that's not the case for you. You will be happy! As I have said, I have always enjoyed Mistura.
Did you tell them it is a surprise birthday dinner? You should! Get the VIP treatment!

I've had good service at Malena & L'Unita, but the service left a little to be desired the last time I was at Mistura. My friend made the reservation a couple weeks prior, and the restaurant confirmed the reservation the day before, but when we showed up, the hostess claimed no reservation was in the book. The hostess was not exactly apologetic, although she did squeeze us into a tiny, high table in the bar area, rather than seating us in the dining room. My friend and I were seated side by side, on an upholstered bench, looking towards the bar. The small elliptical table was a little too small for a proper dinner. No complaints with regards to our server- he was great, and I got the feeling he was embarrassed that we had been seated at what should really just be a table for cocktails and maybe an appetizer, as you wait for your table in the dining room. That being said, it was a good table for people watching, since we saw every guest arrive or leave through the front doors which were just to our left. As the night went on, it looked like other people without reservations were showing up, and it looked like they were being seated in the regular dining room. The food was good, roughly same quality as what I'd expect at Scaramouche, Biff's or Auberge de Pommier.

I'm more likely to dine at L'Unita or Malena more frequently than Mistura, even if some of their dishes are hit or miss, because I find their respective vibes more welcoming than I found the vibe at Mistura.

Sorry to hear that phoenikia. I know exactly the table you speak of. It's funny because the very first time we went to Mistura it was a last minute thing and we called ahead to see if they could accomodate us. We were told that the only table left was the one you sat at. We weren't sure because of the way in which it was described but figured what the hell, we took our chance and went for it. Maybe it was the mood - it was a winter snow storm kind of night but for whatever reason, it felt very romantic to us. Sounds strange probably because it's definitely not secluded or anything but again, it just struck us as being quite romantic.

Having said that, if I was with a girlfriend I might not have enjoyed it as much. Although like you say, you are right there in with all the action. Hmm, interesting.
Anyways just my 2 cents and I could totally understand how someone might not enjoy sitting there.

I wonder if you had asked to be moved later on, if they would have. They are usually very good when it comes to making the customer happy. At least when we've been there.

It's too bad though because it's not cheap and unfortunate not to have enjoyed the entire experience.

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations! Mistura was, for the most part, an excellent choice. Overall, we enjoyed our experience and would go back. We were definitely the youngest ones in the room (we're in our mid-20s..and we were the only Asians).

We got seated a booth, but we saw that table tucked away in a lonely corner beside the bar. No one was sitting there, but it looked very cozy and romantic, and it was away from all the hustle and bustle of the dining area. Service was excellent, and our server (Tonya) was very attentive without being overbearing. Bread basket was divine and there was lots of variety. Total came to ~130 (incl. tax and tip) for 4 apps, 1 dessert, 1 coffee and 1 tea, and we ordered the following:

Balsamic glazed lamb ribs - rich, tangy, fall off the bone meat, and the slaw balanced the richness of the meat very nicely. Definitely a must-have IMO

Guitar Cut Spaghetti w Lobster - Other than the slightly overcooked lobster, we enjoyed this dish a lot. Lots of flavour and the thick-cut spaghetti had a nice bite to it.

Wild Boar Agnolotti w Sour Cherries - Most disappointing dish of the night. We'ver never had boar, but we were definitely not a fan of this dish. We found the meat to be very mushy with no real distinctive flavour. The cherries were great on their own, but I'm not sure if they worked with the dish. Not something I would recommend.

Red Beet Risotto - Very nice, although we both agreed that we would never order this as a main dish as it was quite heavy and sweet

For dessert, we ordered hazelnut nougat semifreddo. It was not bad, but the best part of the dish was the candied hazelnuts.

So happy to hear you tried the lamb ribs. It's def one of my favorite dishes there. In fact, it can be ordered as a main too.

Funny I would never have considered the beet risotto to be on the sweet side but heavy - yes! We usually order one to split amongst 2 couples as an appy. They've actually won awards for that dish.

Anyways glad to hear your evening was a success. Thanks for reporting back pubo.
