Staying in Downtown Pittsburgh - Restaurant Suggestions Needed
I am staying in Downtown Pittsburgh for business tonight (and in the future). Would like to find a place for dinner. I am vegetarian and like a modern-ish restaurant. Love tapas style and most ethnic foods, and prefer a good red wine selection. Like it to be nice but not ridiculously upscale. For example - the restaurant I usually visit in P-Burgh is Dinette, which I love, but looking to try something new and closer to hotel in downtown. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Kaya (in the Strip but not too far from downtown spots) has a veg prix fixe on the third Wednesday of the month, if you ever happen to be here then. Elements is a new place downtown you might check out, though I dunno how veg the menu is. Dinette is well worth the trip of course, but if you've done it over and over then it's time for something else. You might try Sonoma Grille, certainly works for the wine. Consider hitting the South Side sometime, which is still not generally walkable from your hotel but not as far as Dinette either. I suspect you'd enjoy Yo Rita for example, and I believe it would be worth a trip over there. (Try one of their cocktails, though, not wine, IMO.) Also, you should try Salt of the Earth (which is most of the way to Dinette) if you get a chance.
Other stuff downtown: Mexico City can be good if you want that, and I believe it's the location on Wood St that has a liquor license. Fish is not veg but if you happen to enjoy an occasional fish dish as some otherwise-veg people I know do, look for Penn Ave Fish Co on Forbes to soon be open some nights for dinner. That would be BYOB though. There are a couple of Indian places downtown that should be open at dinner; the one I've actually eaten at a couple times is Indian Spices on 6th Street. It's fine, I don't know about mind-blowing or anything. I dunno if they have a liquor license. In general it's not a fantastic spot for ethnic food; the good places are spread out all over the city and wider metro. If you ever want to do BYOB (most downtown dinner spots have licenses, but just in case) the better liquor store downtown is the one on Smithfield in the back lower level of One Oxford Centre (think it's about Smithfield and 3rd Ave or thereabouts). The other one on Liberty has less selection.

Six Penn Kitchen's prix fixe dinner tonight is all veg, and it sounds wonderful. http://www.sixpennkitchen.com/menus/dinner/Oct_8_Dinner.pdf
Does your brand of vegetarian exclude fish & seafood? If not, Seviche is good. http://www.yelp.com/biz/seviche-pittsburgh
One neighborhood east of Downtown (Strip District) is Lidia's. http://www.lidias-pittsburgh.com/#
