i don't know if it's the best but i enjoyed the scones served at the cafe at the wallace collection., this was at least in part due to the peyton & byrne jams that they also serve - i adore the blackcurrant one. peyton does the cafes at a lot of galleries so you could perhaps try whichever is closest to you?

Ridiculously expensive, but the scones at the Ritz are supposed to be great. My g/f used to work as a pastry chef there and she said they were the best she's had.

When I need a scones and cream fix I usually go to one of the Canteen locations. For £3.50 you get 2 delicious warm scones, a scoop of clotted cream and a little pot of raspberry preserves. It's not a fancy presentation, but the scones always taste super-fresh, right out of the oven.

I had a scone craving a couple of years ago. I tried the Marks and Spencer ones - not great. Then I bought some at Lidl and thought they were much better, heated a bit in microwave and served with clotted cream and jam. I used the Scarlet strawberry Tiptree jam. I gave them to a visiting American friend and she loved them.

Palm Court at the Langham does a fine cream tea (including scones). Quite a wonderful experience. http://bit.ly/bUoT2I

Bea's of Bloomsbury also does some easier to get into and much cheaper ones.

I like the scones at Konditor and Cook. Have only bought them from the original branch in Waterloo. They come with strawberries, cream and jam. They also taste a bit shortcakeish which is a good thing in my opinion.
